'88 22R ticking
I have an '88 2wd pickup that is making a ticking sound. I cannot seem to figure out what is causing the noise. It appears to be coming from the valves around the #4 cylinder and can mainly just be heard around idle. The valves have been adjusted, and it quieted down a little, but not enough. I thought it was a blown exhaust manifold gasket since the studs were loose and one fell out near the #4 cylinder, but I just installed a new gasket and it still ticks. I did not see any cracks on the manifold. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be? Has anyone ever had the EGR tube plate on the back of the head leak and cause an exhaust leak type sound?

I have 3 other Toyotas with 22R engines, and the others do not tick as loud, so I doubt it is just the 22R tick. I checked the valve clearances last night and they seemed to be good, the rocker arms were not loose on the shaft, and I did not see anything unusual. I did notice that if I hit the rocker arms to make them tap the valves, they made a lot more noise near the #4 cylinder than in the front of the engine. It is almost like it had an echo to it where the valves in the front just made a dull tap.
