87 to 89 diff swap
Does anyone know off the top of their heads if a 87 rear axle will fit on a 89 4x4 both with 22r(e) engines? I was going to do an entire swap but the guy told me it was a 89 and when I got there, I found out it was a 87. I read around and could not find a definite answer.

As long as they are the same gearing it won't matter. 4cyl and 6 cyl all use the same axle housing (except pre-IFS, but 3rd is still the same). The only difference is 2 pinion vs. 4 pinion. I have a welded 4 cyl for a trail spare, and it fits fine in my 4Runner with the 3slow.

Will it be easier to swap the 3rd's or the whole axle? I am going to pick it up in a minute. Anyone know how long it will take to do either job? I would rather keep the axle on my truck to keep my brakes, bearings, etc. I would also like to know the difficulty of each job. Thanks for the help...
