87 4runner sr5 22re ticking help!

I have a 87 4runner sr5 with a 22re that has a ticking sound to it. It runs strong, does not leak oil, and gets pretty good mpgs (seems to be much higher on the highway than in town). Anyways it has this ticking to it and I have read it could be a valve adjustment, exhaust leak, or the valve cover is too tight. Here is a video of what it sounds like.

My instant reaction was timing chain slap.

That makes sense, but I have a pile of receipts and it says a new timing kit was replaced just two years ago or 20k miles ago. Is the best way to check, is by looking at the oil next oil change to see if there are any little plastic bits?

All you can do is try to isolate the area where the sound seems to be coming from. Even so crude a tool as a long 3/8 drive extension or a long screwdriver pressed to your ear and moved around different areas of the engine might help with that. Among other possibilities are broken timing chain guide, loose rocker, exhaust leak, loose spark plug.

Sounds like valve-train noise.

Mileage on the engine...?

A proper valve adjustment may help, however if the engine has high mileage excessive wear to the valve-train may be present and a remedy for the noise may be replacement parts/machine work. Valves/lash adjusters/rocker arms/ect.

A visual inspection is first step. Remove cylinder head cover and inspect valve-train and timing chain components.

Engine oil level..?

Engine oil weight..?

Ok thanks for the replies. I honestly think its a vale adjustment because the engine has 170k miles on it which is young for Toyota standards. Also I'm running 10-30 synthetic which was changed by the previous owner but I'm going to do an oil change soon. Also it's not low on oil. I have read that it could be and cause a ticking so I filled it ever so slightly. But that didn't really do anything
