87 4runner manual trans problem
hello all
first time poster been browsing awhile
I finally have something to post about my 4runner problem that i have hopefully someone can help me.
there is a knock noise coming from transmission or clutch.
the first time i noticed it. Is when i was driving my 4runner and it popped out of first gear pretty hard. Then couple of days later i was on way to station started hearing a knock noise coming from drivetrain. was thinking oh no something is wrong with motor so decided to turn around and drive other truck. on way home the knock got louder and louder while in gear and driving. It didn't matter which gear i had it in it still had a knock noise. having it in nuetral the knock noise is quieter but still there. If i push in clutch the noise goes away completely. I was thinking something wrong with the clutch. I pulled the trans/transfer case thinking something is wrong with clutch but did not see anything out of ordinary. But I still have the clutch on flywheel. I am thinking something is wrong with transmission but how do i diganose the transmission. i am not a mechanic but i dont mind taking things apart and most of the time i can figure things out.Like i said as soon as i push clutch in the noise goes completely away. I can rev engine up with clutch pushed in and no noise.
couple questions i have
how hard is it to rebuild a manual transmission?
how do i find out where the noise is coming from exactly?
(It sounded like from clutch but don't know took transmission out already it is sitting in garage)
Thanks in advance

found out what my problem was it was the counter gear
there is a total of 3 1/2 teeth missing from this spot alone and the same gear has like 4 other spots that has one tooth missing
i guess that was that knocking noise
i guess i need to get another transmission
any one selling a w56
i am located in mesa AZ
thanks in advance

w56 trans and xcase
i am able to get a deal on a w56 transmission and a transfer case.
the one i had in my truck is a forward shift w56 transmission and transfer case
the one i am able to get is a top mont shift w56 setup.
are these compatible in 87 toyota 4runner 22re?
am i able to use the same crossmember and driveshafts?
is there anything different that i need to know about these 2 setups?
i tried the search options but couldn't find anything that is a sure fit.
the transmission and xcase i have right now the transmission took a crap.here is my post about ithttps://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...roblem-201340/
i still have the forward shift setup in garage just need to put a top mount shift in 4runner(have not bought yet will monday if it will fit right)
this is a picture of the top shift i want to put in 4runner
any help will be much appreciated

Sounds like a worn input shaft or input shaft bearing!
Can you wobble the input shaft at all? Minus rotation, it should not move at all. Worn splines or the tip where it meets the pilot bearing worn?
Toyota transmissions much as the engines are easy to work on. Go step by step and lay all your parts out on a clean bench. You will need a press, bearing separator, slip gauges, dial indicator, micrometer, and good snap ring pliers.
Or just swap the transmission.
Foward shift/top shift will bring the transfercase shifter out of the floor at different locations. The transmissions are identical, but you will want to move the forward shift case onto the new transmission. ++edit++ You may have to swap the transmission outer cases to do this.
