Just looking for so input here. A little background, I acquired a 87 4runner has a 22re and automatic. decided it would make a great vehicle for winter, it doesn't run so I started trouble shooting. It does have spark at the plugs and the fuel pump is running. I have fuel at the fuel rail. What is baffling me is it will not start. It will turn over all day but will not fire. Ive checked the timing and its dead on. Pulled the valve cover and the chain and guides look brand new. All the valves are opening. The previous owner said it just quit running. Ive replaced the igniter, plugs, wires. Ive also tried spraying starter fluid in the intake and still nothing! Sorry for the long post and I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Just how did you test for spark??

Just why was it not running??

Yes the fact it would not start with starting fluid has to mean the timing is really off like 180 degrees or your not really getting spark. Perhaps a botched timing chain install and the last owner just said it quit.

What do the plugs look like ??

Did you use Toyota wires I have had engines that would throw fits and not start using even the best after market wires.

You had no spark to you replaced all the parts with new ??

Bottom line if you have spark if you have fuel even if only starting fluid no mouse nest in the intake if this sat for quite a while.

Air fuel ignition if you have these things the only thing left is timing .

How does a old timing chain look different then new ?? When things are in a oil bath.

One needs to look at the guides.

I pulled the spark plugs and ground them to the valve cover while my friend cranked. Before I replaced the ignitor the spark was an orange color. Now the spark is blue. When I checked the timing I put cylinder 1 on tdc and pulled the cap. The rotor was pointed to number 1. Guess the next step is to pull the timing cover.

When I pulled the valve cover the driver side guide looks to have little to no wear from what I can see. The chain was also tight. Thats true about a botched timing job. Never thought of that.

Sorry forgot to say I put new ngk plugs and they are import direct brand wires.

Remember that the crank goes past TDC twice for each time the distributor swings around once. So it is possible that your TDC is the "other" one, at the top of the exhaust stroke rather than the top of the compression stroke. That's what wyoming9 was referring to by "180° off."

While this is not too likely, I'd at least pull the valve cover to confirm both valves on #1 are closed when you think you're at TDC and checking the distributor. The failure to even fire with starting fluid does point in that direction.

Well I believe I found the problem... I pulled the timing cover to check the chain. I found that the timing is dead on. So then I did a compression test. It only has 10 psi on 1 2 and 4. 3 only had 45 psi. So next step is gonna be pulling the head.
