87 4runner Engine Swap Problem

Ok. I just bought a 87 4runner SR5 with a blown head (w/22RE) and planned on swappin the engine with a 22RE from my 87 pickup. First, we thought it would be easier to mount the engine to the auto tranny by leavin the torque converter on the engine so we did but we couldnt get it past the first spline gear coming from the tranny. After reading the hanes manual and followin its advice to remove the T.C. and place it on the tranny first, we realize that its the T.C. that won't mount to the tranny. What doesnt make sense is that this T.C. is the same one that we took off originally from this 4runner. The only thinge that I know we did different was i accidently bent the metal receiver on the T.C. (part that accepts tranny spline) but i hammered it back to where i thought it was. Any thoughts at all!?!?!??!?!

I concur. That's like replacing the axles because you had a flat tire.

That info wasn't made available on the first post.

Hell yeah, I'd take a free engine with 120K on the clock, but otherwise I say replacing an engine because of a blown headgasket is retarted.

Unless your a masochist.

Please tell me you didn't really do this?!!!

In order to PROPERLY install the torque converter, you have to seat it. That means turn it in the bellhousing until it clicks TWICE. Otherwise, you will break the pump tabs by forcing it together.

Grinding it just means the tabs are not engaged and/or will break when you start it up. Before you get too far, take it back apart and do it right. You might have already ruined the TC and/or the trans pump by doing this however.
