86 4runner,center mount ifs diff,mid travel

i've lerking on here for years but just resantly joined.

i just found ccrraviotto's thred on center mount diff and it got me thinking of some old ideas i had with center mount diffs and long travel ifs, i gave up on it at the time because of not having the experience and ability to do it. but i'm closer now so im going to start a build thred.

so on to the question what do you guys want to see?

i cant make up my mind, ive got a couple different ideas and cant decide.

first im trying to do a center mount diff with 1" body lift,1" drive train lift,1" diff drop, and some oil pan trimming.

so i have two designs

1. is stock width, stock bottom a arm, and new top a arm with a uniball joint with 10" travel with some firewall triming.

or

2. long travel similar to tc's, new uca and lca, uniballs, fiberglass fenders, i believe that based on my cad drawing and with a center diff, it can cycle 15" with 4wd

im still working on the cad designs then i need to mock it up(anyone got the front of an ifs frame thay want to donate?)

so what would you guys want to see? and yes my spelling sucks

Welcome to the forum! Cool looking truck, I like the top chop.

What diff are you using? Any time Ive seen a Center mounted diff (supra 8"), a 4" drop bracket is needed to clear it.

And given any thoughts on what CVs to run?

So i'm going to resurrect my old thread instead of starting a know one.

so because of some health problems i have allot of down time.

so here are the specs on my first design.

EMF uni ball upper ball joints
EMF outer TRE for steering
Center mount diff
Stock Wheel base
7 inch ground clearance at full comp and 19 full droop with 35's
12" travel
1-3" lift
-4 degrees camber at full comp
-3.5 degrees at full droop

ill add more specs as i go, im hoping to start some mock up next week.

here is some CAD pics

What are you going to use for front drive shafts?
What is your track width?

Bump Travel?
Droop Travel?

Nice Start

Stock track width
With 1" of lift its a 50/50 droop vs compression

My goal is to milk as much out of stock width as possible.

Ill build my own axle shaft for now.

Here's an updated pic of the truck. I think im gona start a separate build thread and focus this on the suspension.

So I ran in to a little problem. Im running 35s and a 1" body lift in order to get the travel at stock width I will have to do major fire wall trimming so much that ill have to move my fuse box and computer. If i ran 31s then it wouldn't be a problem. Soooo

I can limit the travel to 10"

Or

Build a new sub frame and move the ifs forward witch has some major advantages accent angle, more clearance for the diff. I would have to build new UCA, new subframe, move the steering box forward just like you would doing a SAS.

I would appreciate any input/thought.

So, is the front diff centered now? Not totally clear from the thread.

Very cool project.

I wouldn't go through all that trouble. Just run the "limited" travel, which is still a major improvement and something attainable without all the extra work. JMO but so not worth it for a an extra couple inches of travel. Plus depending on the offset you might be able to run a 255/85, or a 33x10.5 with proper offset?

No its not centered yet.
I agree that moving it forward for a couple inchs isn't worth it but with a new subframe I can mount the UCA froward and in making them longer and I can do the same for the bottom witch could get me 15-16" travel.

Do you mean making the UCAs longer?

What are you going to do about CV length if the control arms are longer?

I'm about to go swap ball joints, so while I'm out there I'm going to see what happens when the CV travels 15". I would think that they'd bind-up before that, but honestly I've never tried.

Thay will definitely bindat stock width but by center mouning the fromt diff that give each axle an approximately 16" langth alowing for more travel. And for the UCA I was thinking something like the old Rancho uca but much stronger.

Ah, sorry. I forgot that you had mentioned making your own axles.

As to the forward subframe vs. stock, there's no way I would refabbing that but you are more confident in your skills than I am. No doubt that 15" of travel is preferable to 10". That's a significant increase. On 35s that's just ludicrously awesome to imagine!

You say you've got some downtime, so my vote is to go big.

Regardless of which path you choose I'm excited to see the finished product

Been a little while sense an update, but I have a game plan now!

Im going to start a separate build thread for the majority of the stuff ive been doing.

This thread will continue to focus on my front suspension.

So the plan right now. Im not going to do the center mount diff at the moment, im going to do things in stages. I have so many little unfinished things on the truck im not going to attack it right now.

There is a thread on desertrace about using SFA hubs to move the wms in 1.5 inches. Basically do the opposite of what the solid axle guys do. This will allow me to do the standard 3+ a arms and run t100 axles and only add 1.5" per side instead of 3", witch I like. I already did some massive tubing to the fender well so thats out of the way.

Im going to try and stay kinda simple at the moment. I did Fordyce a couple weeks ago and still cant get over how well it does! I love my truck! So im going to try more bolt on suspension stuff! Stuff that other people can do instead of some custom ifs that take a ton of work. I would like to add options and ideas to the growing ifs movement, I have nothing against SFA I just like options.

Btw, if anyone has SFA hubs laying around I need a set. I also have complete ifs hubs if someone is doing a swap and needs some maybe we can trade.

So I got the passenger side a arms and spindle done.
4.5" wide per side
Sfa hubs which bring my wms back in 1.25" so my overall track width change is 6.5" overall
12.5° kpi/sai
7.5° caster
Camber at full drop 3.5°
Camber at full bump 4.5°
17" travel metal to metal
Bumped and strapped a 14.5"
Also moved the spindle 1" forward
