Alright guys, need help. My 22re has very very very low power. I had an 86 pickup with a 22r and that truck had twice the power this thing had, and the 22re being fuel injected, i figured it should have more power than the carburated one...any suggestions?? I do have a CEL coming on at highway speeds in 5th gear around 3k rpm but goes away as soon as i slow down a few mph. No funny smells, fuel mileage is horrible (around 200 miles on a tank....all highway pretty much). The truck rolls fine so I dont think I have any wheel bearings problems or anything like that. Even when clutch is dumped at 5k rpm in first gear....wont even bark the tires...cant even spin them on a gravel road....this is not going to be a fun problem when i get stuck in a mud pit someday. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. - I will be adjusting valves (have clatter), checking cat and replacing fuel filter tonight after work.

ok, overhead has been adjusted, fuel filter not changed and cat has not been touched....having problems though, when i was looking at the vacuum line routing and comparing them to the charts i have in my book, it looks like i have half 22re and half 22ret.....may be the problem with my low power. does anyone know if there is a stamp on the block/head that could help me decifer what engine the parts belong to??

maybe some photos of your engine bay etc, will save you some coin and from you buying a new motor.

Hey, i am having the same problem. i am thinking that maybe my fuel filter is backwards or something. i just rebuilt my entire engine with an engnbuldr kit and a 268 cam and a longtube header but i dont even have enough power to use fith on the interstate on level ground.

Im gonna do a lil more research on it today...definitely need to change the fuel filter on it, didnt do it last night after I finally found the dam thing....hidden up under the intake manifold...might get that done this evening, see if it helps, but i got my doubts.

has anyone had a problem with a timing chain causing a "knocking" sound in the engine, mainly at a steady rpm from the 2000-4000 rpm range??? no knock at all at idle...im concerned.

timing chain guide rail broken and chain hitting timing cover? Take your valve cover off and have a look.

so that could cause it??? god i hope it is...i really dont want that sound im hearing to be a rod knocking...would really ruin my day.

Well, not to scare you, I had a rod bearing going bad, which when I bought the truck I originally thought was the timing chain. But the rails were still good, but I changed them anyway, guess what, know didn't go away. Got worse over time till it finally went about 5,000-6,000 miles later. Was most noticeable when on the throttle at high revs or coming off throttle at mid revs. Almost like how timing chain slap would be.

and see, thats the wierd thing, when i ran my overhead the other day, i looked down at the timing chain and on the drivers side of the timing housing and I can see where the chain has (or was) getting into the housing, but the guide still seems to be in good shape...I kinda wonder is someone else didnt replace the chain before. There also seems to be a pretty good ammount of slack in the chain too, is that normal or should it be fairly tight?

do a compression test first...then evaluate from there.
Your lack of power could just be the valves staying open a little causing poor combustion, hence the lack in power.

Smell your exhaust when running , is it rich? if so it's another sign that your valves are staying open too long. (unburnt fuel exhausting)

I have a 1990 Toyota pickup with a 22re and my overdrive is not working. The motor will rev and the trani will shift but there is no power going to the rear. Does this model have a vacume modulator on the trani? I checked the compression and it was down at 121-125 psi. Now im not a mecanic but that aint what the book told me that it was suposed to be.
