87 4cyl pickup- is it manual locking hubs??

was thinking about buying this truck, but was wondering if it is manual locking hub (the king where you have to get out of the truck to put it in 4x4.

if its not, when did they stop using the manual hubs?

http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/882953821.html

thanks!

Those are manual hubs and they suck....... buy the rig and get some Warns to replace them then send me the Aisins for free.

Just kidding about them sucking they are some really really nice hubs.

Yes, like the other two guys said, they are manual locking Aisin hubs.

Before you buy it, or even drive it, make sure the owner reattaches the intake tube from the Air filter box to the throttle body. I noticed its missing in both pics of the engine. Those may be old pictures, but still, just a heads up in case... That is a reallllyy nice and clean looking truck! $2700 is a good deal, IMO. Good luck with it

$2700 is a tad on the high side in my opinion. I bought my '91 V6 in much better condition than that for $2400. And that was with a fresh rebuilt engine, with only 'bout 15K on the rebuild.

haha, I noticed that too; JB Weld man, that stuff can cure cancer!

also, I think he was aware that this isn't supposed to be capped like that...

if you do go for it, I'd give the entire motor a once-over...

Yeah after looking at all the replies I don't think that manual hubs is the issue you should be looking at. Take a LONG HARD look at that motor. Granted I paid 2500 for a rig with some issues but the motor didn't look raped like that one does. Be aware and be careful.

You'll wanna keep the manuel hubs man. You can just lock them in before you go out wheeling or if it's snowing. Locking the hubs doesn't put it into 4WD, the transfer case does that.

dont I have to lock the hubs in order to put it in 4x4? or can it go in 4x4 with out locking the hubs?

are the lockign hubs only for delivering power to both front tires vs the power going to one tire with out them locked?

I always thought you had to lock the hubs before switching to 4x4

Yes, in order to be in 4 wheel drive you have to lock the hubs
what that is doing is locking the wheels to the axel

and no, both front wheels dont go at the same speed, there are spider gears in the differencal that let the wheels go different speed

your one confused duck

HUBS lock the tires to the axle. .. It's just a gear that slides onto the end of the axle shaft (inside the axle tube) ... its a ring, the inside has splines that fit over the axle... the outside of the ring has gears, or notches or grooves, however you feel neccessary to describe it, locks into the hub which is locked to the wheel.

So when you turn the hub to "lock" all it does is push that gear in(towards the truck) sliding over the end of the axle shaft. when you turn it out, or unlock or FREE.. it pulls the gear off the end of the axle shaft. so the axle shaft now spins freely... and the tire is now separated from the axle shaft.

In the case of this truck, in order to engage the front end, you will need to STOP the truck, get out.. lock both hubs... get back in and engage the transfercase into 4wd HI or LOW =)

AUTO HUBS suck!

cheers!

yeah Ive always been a fan of the auto locking hubs so I can go from 2x4 to 4x4 when ever. but its somthing I can get used to.

what are pros and cons of the auto and manual hubs? just wondering?
