'87 22RE, starts & runs fine then dies after 10 min---2 codes
I have an '87 4Runner 22RE that starts & runs great. No problem with idling or running and when it's running it runs nice & smooth. The problem is after about 10 minutes it simply stalls out. After it stalls it cranks only but won't start. If I let it sit for a while (cools down?) it will fire right back up again until the scenario repeats itself.
The check engine light was not on but I checked to see if I would get any error codes and I get a 6 & 11. My FSM indicates 6 = RPM Signal (crank angle pulse) and 11 = Switch Signal. I have a spare ECU and changed ECUs and the same thing occurs. Initially I thought I might have a problem with the MAF (based on searches here) and I swapped the MAF with another that I have but had the same result.
I'd appreciate any thoughts/help!

Sounds like the signal generator that's located in the distributor. These little buggers will check out fine until the engine warms up, then the ohms go through the roof and the engine quits. Signal generator should be between 140-180 ohms (it's the green plug coming out of the distributor). Warm up the engine until it quits, then immediately ohm out the signal generator.

Yep, signal generator is dead. You may want to hit up strap (he sells Toyota parts at a discounted price on this forum) or 1sttoyotaparts.com for a replacement.

I joined this forum, just to post to this and tell you Thank you very much. I am a pretty decent mechanic, and the error 6 and 11 I had as well, and you nailed it, where a lot of other people couldnt....I took the distributor out of my old 86 (parts 4runner) , cleaned it up, put it in my 87, and bamma, totally fricking cool, started and ran. Please accept my heartfelt thanks!!!! You really helped me out.
