86 Toy raliability?

I'm going to look at a 1986 Toyota single cab 4x4 today. I need something that will be a good commuter as well as a weekend camping rig. With that in mind how well does the IFS do off road? I've been looking for a pre 86 pickup for months and no one has one to sell that isn't ruined so I've moved towards the 86. It has the 22r motor (carb correct?) and a 5 speed. Looks pretty darn neat and clean.

Any advice on what to look for as far as rust or other issues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks cats!

Well as with all Toyota trucks I would make sure I checked out the frame really really well. They are known to rust out. Seen it many times. The 22R is a great motor so shouldn't be anything to be worried about if it has been even the least bit taken care of. Even if it wasn't should be fine. They are tough. The IFS can go along waysin stock form and sounds like you are planning on just driving the thing and leaving it stock for commuting so it should work just fine. I would just test to make sure it shifts nicely and goes in and out of 4x and low nicely. Other than that these are good trucks. I would not hesitate to have another 22R. Not the most power in the world but mine never once let me down at all. I only had it for 3 years but I put 70000miles on it without a faulter. I now have the diesel bug but those 22Rs are great and in stock form are quite easy on fuel as well. Nice light little truck and tough. Can't kill them.

you got me bummed.

i 1st bought a 2wd 88. (sold it)
-2nd. bought 4wd.86kingcab (22r) awesome.
-3rd. bought 4wd 88 kingcab(3.0) blown H.G. (gotta rebuild now.)

the kingcabs are the only way for me.
and the 22r's are bombproof.
but

you should hear a smooth idle, and no rattle from the tensioners (front of the engine) timing chain is steel, but if the tensioners wear out, it can eat through the block.

other than that. they last forever.
the 22r engine is the one that made toyota its famous name of longevity .
(its in many 80-90 model cars/trucks)

sure, its not gonna win a race, but my 86 4x4 (w/33s) can do 70+ on the freeway (not uphill though. really steep it stays about 65 up through the mountain passes) but on normal driving its plenty quick.

the 3.0 does have a lot more power, but since you want a d.d. i would suggest the 22r and a kingcab if you can find one.
