86 toy is dead

Well it has only been 78 miles since the rebuild and now my truck is broke down 45 miles from Home. Going to try to get it towed home sat. Was at a stop light and when it turns green and I gave it gas it lunged forward and died. I tried to restart it but the starter just spun with no resistance. I put it in gear and tried to use the starter to get to the aide of the road but not enough to pull the truck through the snow. But anyway when I did get it off the road I pulled other distributor cap and turned it over but the rotor did not turn. I am hoping for something broken in the front of the motor but my luck says it is either in the bottom end or the trans.

if the rotor doesnt turn its either the tbelt broke or the cam or the dist. itself.

Haven't pulled apart yet still trying to find a way to get it home. It isn't the distributor gear I pulled the cap and the rotor does not move so hopefully the chain broke or by some weird way the key on the crank fell out

how would a crank key affect the rotor not turning.

is the rest of the belts spinning or is the starter tuning and nothing else?

The starter is turning but nothing else but if you leave the truck in gear and not push in the clutch the starter tries to pull the truck. If the key has fallen out of the crank or sheared then the crank would spin but the timing gear on the crank would not but until I get her home it is all just speculation

wont you run the risk of bending valves if the woodruff key has fallen out??? id drop the props if your going to tow it mate plus you could kill the tranny if you tow it to far with the props still on. if your going to check the timing my bottom pully is a 19mm socket id try spinning the bottom pully to see if it locks up on the valves before moving or you might find you might need a new engine.

From what I have seen and read about the r22 motors is it is very hard to bend a valve in these motors and I know some people with car trailors

cool i was just saying becarful towing it if timing has gone. thinking bout has the bottom pully rubber bonding gave way (harmonic balancer) so the engine is fine but the belts not being driving the crank. its a common fault on this year truck the rubber detaches itself of the metal pully but looks fine till ya crank it over and the belts dont spin.

Well it is not as bad as I thought. I pulled the valve cover and the timing chain was snapped in half. The other day I adjusted the valves and thought I dropped a washer but could not find it anywhere and when I put it back together I did not see where it came from so I dismissed it and did not think about it again.

Ok just pulled the timing cover off and found what broke the chain. The shoulder bolts that hold the chain guide to the block one fell out and hung in the crank gear and all the rest were loose could have sworn I tightened them. Guess they will be getting some lock tight on them now. I will be replacing the head gasket for the third time this week end seeing how I loosened up the head to try and get the cover back on
