86 Pickup Rear End Issues

I have a 1986 Toyota Pickup, 22RE, 4x4, 3 inch body lift, 33s. I'm having to replace the rear end assembly. It came with 4.10s. My question is this- If I put a 4.30 rear assembly in will I still be able to use my 4 wheel drive? I drive it regularly on blacktop but I need my 4wd on some occasions. Thanks and God Bless.

in order to use 4 wheel drive your front and rear gear ratios need to match. if the front is 4.10 and the rear is 4.30 the drive shafts/transmission/transfer case will bind and you wont be able to move. if you have a 4.30 front gear set they can be switched out. You probably like the performance of your truck more with the 4.30 / 33 in tire combo better then the 4.10s and 33s

Could probably get it from the same donor as the rear.

Your 2wd is not going to work as far as I know. It should be a 7.5" not an 8". You could use the whole housing but the wheel studs are five lug not six.

That 4.30 ring and pinion will fit in a front 4x4 IFS diff, then just find an 8" 4.30 3rd to match.

What went bad in your current rear axle? Does the whole thing need to be replaced or just the 3rd?

Just the 3rd. I'm just running low on funds right now. Eventually I want to swap it to 4.88 front and rear.

Update: I found a 89 Toyota pickup front and rear differentials. I'm doing the majority of the work myself.. Is it plug and play or do I need to get a professional? If its just swapping out the assemblies I can do that..

Thumbs up

Front i am not sure if is the same or not. Rear Just swap it out. Make sure the bolt pattern on the pinion flanges are the same as what you have now or you will have to swap them with yours. Driveshafts wont bolt up otherwise.
