86 pick up speedo issues

hi all i have been having issues with my speedo for about a 2 years. it would bounce +- 10 mph until i got above 40mph then it would only bounce +- 2 mph. i was cool with this because it did still work. but, about a week ago i heard a very loud whine from the dash when it was cold out side and then the speedo stopped working all together. so. i took the dash apart today and removed the gauge cluster and took and spun the speedo with a drill. all works well and there is no deviation nice and stable at all speeds. so i thought then it must be the cable so i unhooked the cable from the tranny and attached my drill to the cable. spun the cable and it spins just fine. i did notice that the gauge side of the cable does not spin true but what would cause the speedo to work on the bench but not on the truck?

well i shot some carb cleaner down the cable and hooked it all back up and spun the cable with my drill again and presto all works again but the cable makes all kinds of noise so i think i am just going to go down to the junk yard and see if i can snag a cable
