Erik Hinch '86 4Runner: Tucker (Tuck) Build thread

Well I found this one about a year ago, on the local collage campus. It was parked under a tree and seemed to be growing its own bark. So about a year later it found its way to my driveway. This one is named Tuck! the name has a story just like the acquisition does.
[IMG][IMG][IMG],[IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG]

Tuck made it home, and Lift plans were formulated. The plans include installing the 4 1/2" trailmaster suspension lift, 35" BFG's on 15x12 Mickey Thompson Classic rims, New shocks, axle truss, tint, interior upgrades to audio system, Header and new exhaust system.
Repair the cancer spot on the rear lower fender. Interior lighting for cargo area, and recovering front drivers seat to repair the entrance seat damage. [IMG][/IMG]

So I piled up the accumulated parts and contacted Aaron and Hardcore4X4.com and scheduled an install for November 12. He said he can install the lift, dual shock kits, truss, tires and wheels, and repair the crappy welds form the PO of the lift and make TUCK look and ride the way it oughta!

Before all that takes place it had to loose the "old man" running boards and mud flaps.

added some fresh undercarriage paint and grease, painted the wheels insets and changed all the filters (except the fuel filter) and complete tune up. $150 at O'Reilly Auto.

As I began a trip to Statesville NC to pick up my "new to me" BFG MT's for a sweet $450, TUCK lost power and drifted to the road side at Exit 32 on I-81. Called Sam and had it towed to the garage, I determined that the fuel filter was clogged since that was the only filter not replaced. After picking up the tires in my sons "86 runner, I went to Sam's and replaced the fuel filter, still it would not run, I removed the fuel pump from the top of the tank through the tank access door under the rear seat. Noticed a leak in the fuel line that runs along the passenger side frame rail. Sam replaced the bad section, and put on a new fuel pump, then found that a connector had rusted in the wiring harness and was shorting out, which caused the pump to malfunction. Reconnected and WOHOO back on the road again. $200 bucks in that little ordeal.

Ordered new bumper end caps from ROCKAUTO.com, steering stabilizer from Topguncustomz.com, a new 400 watt apm, and a O2 bung from EBAY for the header that I got from California.
Got the pacesetter header from ErikJenna (yotatech member) [IMG][/IMG] Got a SWEET deal on it. Initially planned to install it on my son's '86, but TUCK was screaming for some more horses!

Got a little more time in today, finished painting the factory wheels, dropped the spare outta the rear, painted the rear axle, and undercarriage. Also got the Yakima Rack mounted. [IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG]

[IMG][/IMG]Another project that it's original idea was carried over from the previous Runner (Old Blue) is the hidden amplifier. I purchased this 400w amp from Ebay. Ran all the wires under the carpet and mounted the amp under the rear cargo panel on aluminum strips just behind the rear speaker. [IMG][/IMG] was gonna change the original speakers out, but the SR5 rears had what appeared to be built in amplifiers. Got the amp powered up, strapped down the 200w bass tubes. Not overpowering, but a good clean sound.

Loaded the girls up and took TUCK to Whitetop today, the 2nd highest peak in Virginia. Near the top snapped this of the Clinometer. [IMG][/IMG], as I cleaned the Runner I found this in the glovebox, [IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG], These are RARE from what I can tell. This one is in BRAND NEW condition, still in its original case.

On our trip to Whitetop, these pictures were snapped. [IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG],[IMG][/IMG]. The new to me rig performed flawlessly. We had a blast, but noticed the rear suspension bottoming out quite a bit, that will change next weekend!

Last "stock" photo shot before going to Hardcore4x4 in NC for lift, shocks, and tires. TUCK will never be the same. Aaron said man that is a straight, clean Runner. But it will look a lot better when it leaves here. [IMG][/IMG] Aaron, said he is gonna get started on the project tomorrow (11-12-12) should take about 2 days, Installing the 4" Trailmaster lift, Shocks, and rear axle truss, front upper and lower ball joints (while it is basically apart anyway), and Pro-comp steering stabilizer, 35" BFG's and the Mickey Thompson 15x12's with balance beads. Will post pics as they are available. [IMG][/IMG]

Tuck made it back from the shop today! Aaron at Hardcore4x4 did a GREAT job! Super guy to deal with. [IMG][/IMG] Added the rear axle truss from my '91 built in 1995[IMG][/IMG], loving the new stance, ability, and the new shoes! [IMG][/IMG]

Had an issue with the shocks not fitting in the rear. I drove it home without shocks, but remembered I had some Rancho shocks that I removed from Old Blue a couple years ago. They worked PERFECTLY! While it was apart, Aaron added upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, the left CV axle. He advised that one of the sway bar bolts was broken, so to attach the swaybar drop down brackets he tack welded the bracket on.

Next on the list is to upgrade the gears from stock 4:10's to 4:88's. I ran 4:88's in my 91 with 39.5" boggers, pulled them fine and even used 5th gear some. Looking to switch in February or March 2013. [IMG][/IMG]

Do you know where the rear bumper came from? Looks like its made to match the side end caps. I am going to look at a reciever hitch this week and like how it yours works with the rear bumper.
