86 4runner fuel issue
So I have an 86 4runner with a 22re, has almost 203,000 miles on it. When it is cold, it runs and drives normally. The issue i'm having is that when it is good and warmed up it seems like it's struggling to get fuel. Has a new fuel filter so thats not it. The engine will start surging on steady acceleration, accompanied by the check engine light. At a certain point it just died and I had to push it off the road (just cranked and cranked when i tried starting it again). The reason i'm pretty sure its a fuel issue is because it would start when i sprayed starting fluid in the throttle body, but ran very rough (idle around 200 rpm) and died again later down the road. I'm afraid it could be a fuel pump issue but I am really not sure
1. I know there is a fuel pump test connector but do you need to have the key in the start pos. to make it work?
2. If the fuel pump is good then could it be a clogged fuel pump strainer?
maybe inside the tank is rusty from low quality fuel? maybe something else?
Feel free to let me know what y'all think!

86Runnerdude,
I have been restoring/building an 87. At some point in the past, someone drilled out the protective cover and adjusted the air/fuel mixture screw on the airbox. It has been very difficult to get the screw back to near factory. Take a look…
