Smile 86 22rte auto to manual swap wiring questions

just picked up an 86 4runner sr5 turbo that was converted to manual. all works good except the 4X4. previous owner says he didnt plug the transfer case wires into the 4x4 indicator sensor, and didnt connect the reverse lights. reverse wire comes out of tranny i believe, and 4x4 indicator comes out of transfer case, right? would this cause the 4x4 to not work? when i try the 4x4 it will shift into 4h and 4L and hubs turn to lock position, but no power is delivered. any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated. thanks.

ps. this is my first rig so consider me a noobie.

the wiring doesn't have anything to do with the 4wheel drive working as you don't have ADD. where does the power stop- is ur front driveshaft spinning? is both 1/2 shafts spinning? Jack each front tire up, one at a time with it in 4 wheel drive and hubs locked in and see what happens when you try to turn the tires. They should not turn.... as for the wiring, back up light sensor on the R series trans is on right side (pass) ~center top to bottom and right in front of the intermediate plate in trans. the 4wd indicator switch is up near the shifters, same side of as reverse light switch. (This is if PO used a r151 trans). Figguring out what wires to hook them up to in the harness is a little nore tricky. I did it on my 91 v6 auto which is a totaly different wiring harness than my 86 RTE auto harness. The 86 I just hooked up the reverse lights to a lighted switch so i could use them anytime, It's nice for working around the truck at night and still legal in Pa.

as for the front drive shaft and 1/2 axles.. drive shaft will not spin in 4wd, however, the 1/2 shafts will turn. when i turn one, the other turns the opposite direction. oh, and with the hubs. when i lock one and then turn the tire, i hear something engaging, but the tire still turns. thanks so much with help, you guys are much more helpful than some thieving mechanic.

ADD = automatic disconecting differential. Something you don't have (started in 88 I think..)

Lock both front hubs, spin a tire, does the diff make any funky sounds?

If you put it in 4wd do you get power to the front d-shaft??

-ADD- Automatic Disconnecting Differential. Front end has a vacuum operated actuator that engages the front end instead of manual lockout hubs...
-R151's have a large 2" hole in the bottom of the bellhousing, there should be a rubber plug in it. if not they threw a regular 4 cyl trans in it... marlin crawler has alot of pretty pics posted on their site with varios transmissions if ur not sure.
- Kinda sounds like ur 4wd is working OK. But I think ur checking it wrong. If u jack up both tires, one will spin in the opposite direction if you have an open or LS diff. Put one of the front wheels back on the ground and see if it turns. If it doesn't ur 4wd is engaged and should be working.

when i engage 4wd and lift each tire seperatly, each tire spins freely, which i guess means 4wd is NOT working? however, the drive shaft does NOT spin when i engage 4wd.when i lock the hubs i DO hear something inside the diff engaging. one hub is rather harder to turn than the other. what could it be?
