Chef - what type of Hastings rings were they? Can you be more specific?

Bringing back this thread from the dead but, thought I'd just post an update from previous post a few years back.
My oil consumption has gotten worse since last I posted to the tune of about a quart in 3-400 miles (turns black after that many miles on fresh oil)
Tore the motor down (maybe 20,000 miles since rebuild), rings looked great!
Figured it couldn't be the problem had the head rebuilt, put it back together and it got worse!
Tore it down again pulled the rings, gave it a light ball honing and installed Sealed Power cast rings then, noticed the machine shop installed the wrong valve stem seals.....they installed umbrella style seals so, oil was going right past the guides!
They also milled it so far that my cam timing was retarded, requiring an adjustable cam gear!
Well I installed the correct seals and it's all back together and running great!
It's only been about 600 miles but, by now the oil would've been black and it would have gone through 2 quarts!
Just thought I'd share.
Merry Christmas!
Hans

Merry christmas to all!

pays to check, QC is cheaper than multiple tear downs. Good advice and updates are always welcome.

I rebuilt a 22r a few year's ago and was having trouble with the ring's seating.
Could'nt figure out why until a toyota dealership mechanic told me that if you lube the ring's with oil during assembly they would never seat. That is what I did. Anybody else ever hear this ?

Can't possibly be true.

The instant the engine starts, oil spray from the con rod bearings oils the cylinders continuously, so....... the cylinders are heavily oiled from the get, whether you oiled them on assembly, or not.

What a crock of manure.

It has to do with the Ra finish of the cylinder and its compatibility with the rings chosen.

If I did that it junk every engine I've assembled.

I've tried this with over a dozen 22r and 22re engines over a 32 year career in auto repair. The ones that the ring's were lubed during assembly did'nt seat the one's that were not lubed seated. I don't have the technical info as to why this work's but it does. Just trying to pass on some useful info. that has worked for me over the year's .......
