it'd be going in my '85 4runner

what'r your thoughts/opinions??

I personally would go for the I-6.

I used to own a 1987 supra so i guess im rather partial to the 7m series motors...

If you do not end up going with the 7m let me know who was trying to let it go!!

I suppose it depends on yer goals for the project...

Normally Id go for the 7mge
BUT
the 3.4 is a more modern engine and has ODBII which makes trouble shooting a tad easier at times.

Both require new motor mounts (AFAIK)

3.4L might be harder unless it comes as a "front clip" so you cna get allt he little things that nickle and dime a swap...

If you're not going to rebuild them, I'd say 3.4 since it fits better, is a newer, and probably has lower mileage.

People seem to have less problems when installing the 3.4 too...ORS sells a kit which makes the conversion that much easier.

Well I love my 3.4l, but i started with v6 4runners, so I didn't have to buy a tranny. If you decide on a 3.4l you will need a r151 or 150 transmission, or a340f if you want an auto. If you are willing to spend the extra money this swap is easy(you will have to weld on some new motor mounts) and worth it in my eyes. My supercharged 4runner is fast, will run up I70 eastbound out of Silverthorn CO at 75mph with no problems. My old 22re truck would only do 35mph at the top.

900 bones for a engine tranny combo is hard to beat, the 7m I though bolted to the stock 22r mounts, I could be wrong as I have never performed this swap. They did have headgasket issuse with poor maintence, and they kinda get oil leaks easier then 3.4l (might be just due to age). Oil leaks on these engines usally mean blowby, engine rebuild in the future or they were over heated due to poor stock cooling system on the supra. They make the radiator kinda cramped. I think your on your own for wiring, ORS doesn't offer a harness.

If you are ok to spend more and want a very reliable engine that is easy to fix, get the 3.4l.

If money is tight and the Engine looks good with little to no oil leaks, get the 7m

Personally I'd go with the 7M, here's why:

I like I6's a hell of a lot more than V6's. The 7M has as much or more aftermarket support than the 5VZE due to the supra crowd, so if you want to build big power it'll be easier and cheaper. Plus you can't beat a built I6 for torque.

The 7M stock make just a hair less power, but will get better milage than the 5VZE. A supra will get 35mpg on the highway, and dumped into a 4000lb truck they can still break 25. The 5VZE does low 20's. Yes I know this isn't a huge seller, but it's still there.

The 7M has less wiring to worry about, and no OBDII. I'm only speculating on this part: but how much more hasstle are you going to run into trying to get an 85 w/ OBDII smogged vs no OBDII?

The only thing I think the 5VZE has going for it over the 7M is where it makes power. The V6 is a truck engine so makes most of its power down low where its really needed. The 7M makes lots of power, but higher in the RPMs, so might not be as good for ultra low speed stuff in the rocks: you don't want to be turning 4500RPM in 1st gear low to get the power/torque you need when you could be running 2500...less wear on everything.

But those are my arguments, I'd love a 7M in my truck. If I run into problems with my 22RTE I'm swapping in an NA 7M, no questions asked.

I had the 7m b4 in a supra....get the 3.4. I really like the feel of that motor in a runner.

Doesn't the 7mge bolt up to the 22RE tranny?

If not, I would take the 3.4.
