1992 toyota pickup 2wd 22re manual transmission

Hi guys, I just bought a 1992 toyota pickup. When I drive it I noticed I can't get it in to 4th gear. It would grind, and it felt like it wasn't slipping all the way in to 4th. I also found that when I couldn't get it in to 4th I would downshift to 3rd and it would grind, and be hard to get in to gear. It's strange because going from 2nd to 3rd is not a problem. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Maybe someone has had this same problem and wouldn't mind sharing their experience, and how they fixed this issue. Thank you.

Check the clutch master fluid level. If the master is low, check for leaks behind the master inside the truck, and at the slave cylinder on the trans.
Check the trans fluid level and condition, if it looks metallic it might have worn synchros in the trans.
Does it go into all gears ok at idle while stopped?
Check the clutch pedal pushrod adjustment as per the FSM linked
Does it pop out of 5th gear while driving and does the shifter seem like it's loose or wobbly? If so replace the shifter seat and socket, Marlincrawler makes a heavy duty replacement. https://www.marlincrawler.com/transm...avy-duty-seats

My '89 4Runner, W56 transmission, was very hard to get into 4th gear and it seemed to pop out. I ordered the Marlin Crawler shifter seat and bushing. When I took the old seat out I was concerned there was a worse problem because the original Toyota seat looked perfect. The new Marlin seat cured the problem though. Others have said their old seat was crumbled and destroyed but mine looked to be in excellent condition. The whole change over required a Phillips head screwdriver and vise grips to get the old bushing off the bottom of the shifter. And a little grease. It was very easy.

The old seat. Maybe previous owner changed it. 150k on 4Runner.

The hardest part about changing the shifter seat is getting the shifter retainer out. If you have a pair of these horseshoe clip pliers in your toolbox, they work great for grabbing the flat parts of the retainer to turn it.

Those weren't needed on the W56 but the 4WD shifter would need them.

They worked great on a W55 2WD. Couldn't get a good hold of it by hand. I'm not talking about using them as snap-ring pliers, I'm talking about grabbing the entire retainer where the flat spots are.

Thanks for you're feedback bswarm, I will have to do a check of all the fluid levels, and check for metallic shavings. It goes into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and reverse ok, and it does have a good idle while stopped. It never popped out of 5th gear while driving, and the shifter does not feel loose or wobbly. It feels nice and firm while in gear. I've never had it pop out of any gear while driving it. The only problem I've noticed so far is it doesn't feel like it's going all the way into 4th, and it grinds when I am letting off the clutch. Also it doesn't seem like it's going all the way into to 3rd but when upshifting it does catch without grinding.. Also thanks to Nervo19 I will definitely research more on what you both have recommended, and again I really appreciate you're help.

May be a sign that a mainshaft bearing is failing and the mainshaft endplay is becoming excessive. I have seen this in a W56 that I had.

Does the tranny make any noise in any gears, either power or coast??

@nervo19 - That is only part of the oem shifter bushing, that piece should be covered in rubber. To every one else - If your having trouble getting the transmission into any gear its a very worth while upgrade to replace the shifter bushing. Based solely on the age of these trucks the bushing needs to be replaced. The only time I would think your transmission needs rebuild is if the bearings are whining or crunching lol

Your link isn't working. I recommend the Marlin Crawler plus get a socket thing too from the bottom left of this page. I think you get the white seat. https://www.marlincrawler.com/transm...avy-duty-seats
