5 speed swap or replace auto?

5 speed swap or replace auto?
Just fishing for options, my trans just went in my 94 4runner 185k. I'm debating whether or not I should 5 speed swap or just replace the auto with a junkyard trans. The swap seems pretty straight forward but I havn't found any real build up threads with pics or anything of the sort for the swap besides this one

What do you guys think I should do with the truck? Its a DD/trail rig. If any of you know of any really good detailed swap threads I would like to see them too, Everything I looked up turned into a "search" flame dead end lol. Thanks in advance

i like driving a 5spd myself, but its a lil more tricky off road, its a lil bit better gas mileage and more power IMO i say do it, i dunno of any good threads tho...you could try searching pirate4x4..

I 2nd the idea of getting a 2nd vehicle lots of little parts and this can turn into a long term project with out all the parts right at hand.
You might want to think about buying a running 5speed vehicle and using yours for what parts you want to keep and sell what you don`t and junk the rest.

Can't even express in words the shock and awe I was in when I first drove my 4runner again after swapping in the 5spd. I can't even imagine how gutless she would be if it still had the auto now with bigger tires and more weight.

lol thanks for the responses guys, so does ANYONE have a good write up on the swap that can help me out? My truck has too many mods to even think about just dumping everything into a donor vehicle like wyoming9 suggested.

pickup a donor vehicle with an good trans, rusted to hell dents everywhere preferably running so you can verify the trans is in good working order for 4-500 then you could part it out or sell it to the scraper for $250 new clutch and PP your need the pedal box assembly master and slave cyl's for the clutch as well as the lines, the flywheel and possibly the drive shafts mabye a few other little parts as well that i cant think of off the top of my head, anywhaz my point is your probably cheaper off buying an donor vehicle to get all your parts from rather than buying part by part from the junk yard or auto parts store. everything should all all bolt in place as the body and frame came the same between both 5speed and auto equipped vehicles, also you might have to jumper an wire so that it thinks the vehicle is in park for the starter to engage

The thing about detailed write ups on how to do something most all of us forget a step or two something we think is so simple we just do it and don`t think about it .
One thing that comes to mind is the bracket or tab if you will where the steel line from the clutch slave cylinder joins with the rubber line that goes back to the steel line that goes up to the clutch master cylinder .
Not only is it good to have the whole vehicle right there it is also great to have a 5 speed vehicle to look at so you can see just how and where things are . I was lucky enough to be able to do that.
Another thing I thought of just now cutting your floor out to accept the shifters for the transmission and transfer case . It would not be good to have the whole trans and transfer case bolted up only to find out you can`t get the transfer case shifter in.
I am not that far away if you get into this and think you will need help PM me and will see what we can do. I was going to look at a Supra down your way about 7 or so years ago just never worked out.

I'll be in the same boat very soon. The engine went on the '92 and I found a '94 manual in good shape (the drive train that is-the body sucks). So I'm planning on swapping the engine and the trany all at once and turning the '92 into a 5spd.
