5.29s on my 95 V6 4Runner..

can i swap out the rear gears from the stock 4.88s on my 4Runner with a new 5.29 ring and pinion set? i have been told that i cant do it and i have to get a completely new third member.

But im just wondering why i can search 4x4 part sites for 95 V6 4runner ring and pinion sets.

If anyone could help me with this that would me great.

Thank you.

but you'll need to have the front (assuming it still IFS) regeared... i am not sure if you can regear the 4.88 front diff or not. you may have to find a 4.10-4.56 on craigslist, then buy the 7.5" 5.29 gear sets and have them professionally installed.

How can you tell the stock gear ratio? I've got a 92 3.0 SR5 4Runner, told we could read the vin but don't know how to.

G144 = 4.88

Don't regear factory 4.56s and 4.88s, they are worth some money. Sell them, buy 4.10s which aren't worth much at all, and regear them instead.

ummmmm
a you dont have 2.50 gears
b your not look for the vin your looking for the alxe code on the door jam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
g144 is the code for a 4runner with 488 gears
the reason you cant regear 488s is because they use an offset pinion
the entire case is offset to make room for the gears
aftermarket gears are made differently therfore they can be run in other cases not using 488 gears.
read these pages for more info
and if you do plan to have someone regear for you talk to ZUK at gearinstalls.com
there is NO ONE better
