4x4 manual 5 speed oil capasity
Hello all
I got an 88 4runner 4x4 manual 5 speed.
My stupid newbie problem is…
I drained the Transmission oil and re filled the transmision but it held over 1 gallon of oil. I only have a Chiltons manual and it dosent show the correct filler hole or the trans oil capasity.
It only says that the filler hole is on the passenger side for 5 speed trans.
Any ideas what the heck I did wrong? Or is this correct?

I don't know about the 88, but I just looked at the 94 owner's manual which says that the transmission capacity is either 4.1 quarts or 3.1 quarts depending on transmission model. So, my wag is that you didn't do anything wrong.

Best I can tell, the transmission that takes 4.1 q is the G58 which did not come on 88 4runners. So, if your transmission is the W56 (22RE) or R150F (6 cyl) you somehow got too much oil into it.
Filler is on the driver's side (just like the picture above) and should be a plug -- pretty much the same as the drain plug. Is that where you put the oil?

I put it in on the passenger side, the Chilton's manual said all 5 speed trans have the filler hole on the passenger side (unless I was smoking crack that day). And there is a hole plug and a hole way up on the top. They dont have a picture in the Chiltons manual.
Anyways, I found the hole on the drivers side. I'm going to drain it and re fill it from the drivers side.
This reminds me of another first time situation. I had the wrong hole that time too.
Thanks Guys
I was a GM/VW guy up untill last week.

Rather than draining and refilling, you can just remove the filler plug and let the excess drain out. It'll be messy that way, but it might be easier to clean up the tranny than to refill it.
Good luck with it.
