I've been searching for some answer and still come up with NONE.

I have a 94 toyota pickup 4x4 v6 manual. I would like to swap out the 3rd member and install in something like 3.7 ratio. I believe i have a 4.88 ratio currently. Let me know if it is possible i can find something to do the swap. Thanks!!!!

the truck is revving a bit high on the freeway. It'll be great to run something around 3.7 or so. 3.9 or 4.10 would be nice too. what year and model can i get the 3rd member from and would it be hard to do the swap???

BTW i have ADD. whatever that is... I'm new to these 4x4 things....

89 to 95 will fix and 4.10 or 4.56 gears will be best what size tires are u running?

8in in the rear and 7.5 in the front.

Just how high are you revving? Putting lower gears in it (unless your running undersized tires) will make it gutless.

Gears can be changed in a weekend, in the driveway, with basic tools ans skills. There are plenty of write ups on it.

You can get gears from any 86-95 Pickup or 4runner. Read that link I posted... It has alot of quality gear info.

How about instead of changing the gears....you get bigger tires. Haha

i'm running on stock 31s. on freeway at 70mph 2700 to 2800rpm.

I tried to take off at a stop light.... its sooo slow! I mean i feel the power but the speed slowly increase.

No power at low speed is going to get much worse with taller gears. 2700 isn't too high, that's what Toyota intended.

Sounds normal to me.... My engine is running 3k rpm at 75-80mph. With 33s... Stock 4.10s.

I'm not sure your understanding what the gears will do. If you put in lower (numerically higher) gears, your power will feel better but your highway rpms will get higher. If you put in higher (numerically lower) gears, your power will be more gutless, but your highway rpms will be lower. And I don't think stock size tires were 31s, we're they? I thought it was closer to 28-29" diameter...

well i just found out i'm actually running a 8" 4.56 with 4 pinion open diff. Anyone would know what vehicle would have a 4.1 3rd member? I need the front and rears. Thanks for all of your help!!!!

4 cylinder/5 speed trucks will have 4.10's for sure.

So, you think it rev's high on the freeway. So you would need to lower your ratio.
What's your current ratio?

So you want to go down on the ratio, from 4.56:1 to 4.10:1.

So you need a higher ratio to make acceleration better?
... and a lower ratio to lower the RPM's the engine rev's at on the highway?

Final drive gears aren't going to help you meet all of your goals. A higher numeric ratio will increase your acceleration ability, but also make the engine turn even higher RPMs on the highway. A lower numeric ratio will lower your RPMs on the highway but take more off of your acceleration.

The only way to do both, increase acceleration and reduce RPMs onthe highway is by changing the gear ratios within the transmission itself. If you think a moment about it, you'll understand what I mean. Each gear changes how many rev's the engine makes for every rev of the "output" of the transmission- whether to the rear wheels for a 2wd truck, or transfer case for a 4wd.

No, you'll need to do both, or else 4x4 will cause serious carnage.
