4wd problems

Hey so I wanted to get your guys opinion on a problem my cousin is having with his truck. So my cousin just bought a 93 pickup and everytime he puts the truck in 4wd the rear end almost feels like it's dragging and the tires sort of spin and slip. What could cause this? I was thinking he has different gear ratios in the front and rear axles. Just wanted to get your guys opinions on it.

Different gear ratios and/or different tire sizes will cause this.

Okay it has the same size tires on it and is there a way to tell the gear ratios without taking the doffs out?
