4runner sr5 cluster swap into pickup questions
Hey all, I bought a 4 runner V6 cluster to put into my 92 V6 truck. From what I've read it's mostly plug and play. I know i have electronic speedo and the cluster I bought is also electronic speedo. Here are the questions.
1. I know the oil sender unit has to be changed, I searched but I can't seem to find the part number. Everyone say autozone has it, but all I can find on their website is the oil switch, which car should I be searching under, I've tried both 4runner and pickup and they're the same part number. Anyone know the part number even toyota OEM part number will do.
2. I will lose my gear indicators in this swap right ? my truck has the PRNDL2 while i see the 4 runner does not. Has anyone been able to save this somehow ? If not no big deal.
3. Location of the oil sender unit is 9 o'clock to the oil filter correct ?
Thank you.

1. Sender can be purchased directly from the dealer.. Easiest way.
2. Your truck is auto and the 4runner was 5speed?
3. Oil sender location is directly in front of the oil filter and you will also need the pigtail to connect to the sender (or just slide the male spade connector from the oil switch on the pressure sender)

These swaps are not necessarily plug and play. My 89 4Runner was, but with your 92 you may run into two issues.
1) The 80's trucks had a universal wiring harness, which means the wiring was the same regardless of the model and options, the 90 series trucks don't seem to have this. the harness seem to be model and option specific, so you probably don't have a tach wire built into your harness.
2) You are putting a 5spd cluster into an auto truck, you need to look at both sets of wiring diagrams, because on most of these the pin configuration in the connectors that plug into the cluster are different between an auto and a manual. Refer to this post and you will see what I mean.

yes, the pining between auto and 5spd is different. I got burned on this.
While technically you can find the pinout for each, and pul the wires out of the big connector and re-pin them - honestly it's easier to just find one fro ma matching truck.
Also - I don't know if the fuel tanks are the same size in these two trucks - but if not, your fuel guage will not read right.
I have this problem on mine, it was from a truck w/ a larger tank (mien is a 4Runner) and the guage goes to E really fast and sits there for the last few gallons before the reserve light comes on.

Ok. I did the swap... waited awhile for the oil sender unit to come in. I did have to run a wire for the tach. But the issue i'm having is that the while the speedo works my trip/odo doesn't move up. I'm sure I drove more than a mile. I traced the wires and they're in the same place for both clusters.
I did roll up the miles to match my odo by using this thread

May be i broke it ? I did put in the old cluster and the miles roll up fine.

Cool!, I remember seeing it when we you stopped by the group meet up at the junk yard. I wish I had seen your post earlier, I have an extra oil pressure gauge I would have given you. There are plenty at the yards off the 4runners.
We should meet up again!

Oh you have to tell me which yards have 4runners or trucks. I've only seen 2 4runners at the junk yards and it was stripped both times, and 0 92-95 trucks. Yeah we should setup another meet, did you goto TORC? I forgot it was yesterday.

I've seen two pretty badly wrecked trucks 90-95 at the yard in Stanton, other than that it's nearly impossible to find them around our area. There are plenty early 80's trucks at the Anaheim yard though.
1st Gen 4runners I've seen 2 both at the Wilmington large yard over a years period, both stripped to the bone. 2nd Gen 4runners I've seen at all the yards, the Wilmington large and small yards and Anaheim yard usually always have a few or more. I've also seen a two door 2nd Gen there..but the door panels were already taken
PM me what your looking for and I'll keep an eye out for you.
