fuel would more than likely be your biggest issue... of course a changing of all fluids would be the best approach. Drain gas and change the filter before you try and start it.

my 88 4runner was sitting for a number of years before i got it.

definitely check the fuel. my fuel pump died, too.

so, new fresh fuel was added and new fuel pump.

let's not talk about the engine - doh!

kind of a sore spot - lol.

but, check the belts and hoses... mine were brittle.

don't forget the battery. mine was dead.

good luck.

I'd be concerned the cylinder walls and rings were rusted up along with other steel parts internally. Hopefully someone fogged the cylinders before storage, might not hurt to do it now before you start it. I'd at least try and look into the spark plug holes to see if you can see any problems, a bore scope would be great.

You might need new tires as well because of flat spots

Drain all the fuel
Unhook fuel line from engine and purge the rest of it out
Change fuel filter
Change oil + filter
Change all drivetrain fluids
Check tires for cracks/flat spots
Check brake componants
Check belts for cracks
Check/replace battery?
Tune up
change coolant

check Brake calipers for seizing as well, they can set up a whole lot quicker than 4 years.

If the engine does turn over, i would maybe try letting it crank over without the spark plugs in it to get any unwanted fluids out of the cylinders.

add stabil fuel to the gas you replace the old stuff with
it will raise octane level of fuel which should help it start easier

If it is a manual the clutch will probably be rusted to the flywheel as mine did in sitting outside 2 weeks.

Sounds like you have a LOT of work ahead of you.

x2...but I would add, remove all the sparkplugs, pour a tablespoon of oil down each sparkplug hole, then try to turn the engine over by hand. That will at least pre-lube the cylinder walls slightly before you crank it over with the starter. When you're certain that it turns ok by hand, change the oil and filter, remove the old gas from the tank and get some new gas in there, leave the sparkplugs out, pull the fuel injector fuse so that you don't shoot fuel into the cylinders, then crank the engine over with the starter. Keep cranking until you see proper oil pressure on your guage (5-10 seconds). This will have circulated oil through your engine while it's not under load.

Finally, re-install your sparkplugs, wires and fuel injector fuse, then try to start it up. If the engine runs fine, then spend the money on replacing the rest of your fluids and changing brake components, etc...

do both filters if it's got two.worth mentioning is the drain plug on the tank. You have to pull the tank shield off first but that plug is a lifesaver.check the thermostat and radiator for corrosion.Even more important is PB blaster or any kind of penetrating oil. It's easier pulling any nuts or bolts if you let it eat the rust first. mine sat for 2 years and there was some rust.I also had to overhaul the brake system for safety.

all the rubber on my calipers and the wheel cylinders for the drums were rotted and cracked. You might pull those for inspection before road testing.just be patient and make a checklist of all these great suggestions from the other members they've helped me a lot.GOOD LUCK
