4cylinder to v6 differential question

Hello everyone, I pickup up a parts 92 4runner last night, it's the v6 model. I curretly have a 87 4runner with the 22re, question on switching differentials, problem is the 92 is coil spring vs my leaf spring model, it's a pain to switch over the hole differential because it involves welding and cutting, would the hole 3rd member swap over or woukd it be easier just to switch the hole diff and start welding leaf perches onto the diff.

Any help is awesome thanks guys

it looks like the 3rds might swap??? http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

how wide is the axle housing in the '87 tho? i don't know when toyota switched over to a wider axle; someone might have already swapped axle housings anyway, better measure it first.

Hey, yes the 87 axle is narrower then the 92, another reason why I would like to keep my housing and switch the 3rds, but I'm getting a little confused on the forums about conversion bearings that must be used to switch them?

What you're calling the differential is the rear axle. The rear 3rd member from any 79-95 4WD PU/4Runner will bolt to any 79-95 4WD PU/4Runner rear axle. 4 cyl. or V6/Turbo doesn't matter.

it would certainly be easier to just swap 3rds, but putting a wider axle housing under the truck is usually one of the first things people do... it's an opportunity to rotate the axle housing up, if you are going to offroad it, and if you are going to buy chromoly axle shafts, you'd be better off throwing money at wider axles, but they are available in either length: https://www.trail-gear.com/TG/Longfi...178-1-KIT.aspx

The 4cyl differential is weaker than the V6 differential so most people swap the V6 3rd member into the 4cyl axle not the other way around like you want to do. If you are just daily driving it not abusing it, it will probably be ok. If you want to put lockers in and wheel it you will probably break it.
