4cyl to 6cyl transmission swap

I have a 1988 Toyota with a W56 (as far as I know) 5 speed transmission. It has 220,000 miles, is leaking oil and is getting harder and harder to get into first. I want to do a 3rz swap at some point, but it won't be until I have a little more money. What I have read about 3rz swaps is that most people put a r150 transmission behind them. My question is could I put a r150 behind my 22re and if did what would be the best year of r150? I have heard that the 3rz has the same bolt pattern as the 22re. So if I got a marlin crawler bellhousing for a 3rz to r150 swap would it work if I kept my 22re for now and swapped it the 3rz later when I have more money? Any input would be appreciated.

you can get a marlin crawler bellhousing to convert over to r-series trans.

Best would be a r151f out of a turbo 22re, and then a r150 out of a v6 86-95 truck. The taco/runner r150 f won't work too well due to the tcase that is driver drop.

3rz is the same bolt pattern as the 22re, you could also get a w59 then a transfer case adapter. The w59 is stronger than the w56 but weaker than the r150

Good choice on the swap, thats what i would do if i had your truck. I enjoy my 2.7

Thanks, one more question. Is there a difference between the 88-91 and 92-95 transmissions? Marlin crawler has these transmissions listed as being slightly different with different part numbers and different rebuild kits. Is one better than the other? Will the newer one not bolt into my truck?

Question Know about tranny swaps? (auto to manual)

Hey I'm steve. Im new to the forum thing so I'm not sure how to do this. I have an 87 toyota extra cab 4x4 truck that I'm working on and trying to restore. My father and I recently did a tranny swap. From auto to manual. Anyway, my dad previously did one on a 4runner. His cranked right up after the swap doing the exact same thing I did to mine but mine wont turn over. I have to turn the key on then cross the leads on the starter. I have checked wires and fuses and theyre all correct. Even put the neutral safety switch back in. Please share your knowledge if you know. I'm just a young dude tryin to restore an amazing machine.

welcome to YT!! i think there is a fusible link between the starter and the battery. i would check that and also the ignition switch. good luck with your build.

If you kept the Auto tranny ECU, it needs to be tricked into thinking the vehicle is in neutral/park in order to run.

are 1989 4sp pickup transmissions diffrent then 1988 4spd transmission?

the reason why i am asking this is because i have a 1988 toyota pickup with a 22r motor with a 4sp transmission and it is bad, i found a 1989 toyota pickup with a 22r motor with a 4spd transmission but i am not 100% forsure i can use it because i dont know if they are diffrent or not. can anyone tell me if i will be able to use the 1989 transmission?
