Taking the day off, other axle tomorrow the "easy way", drop the ball joints and go in from the side, and be done with it, and move on.
Opened up the shifter boot area, got first look, only remaining filthy part of the underbody, read the articles at the 4crawler site regarding the shifter mod plates, along with the 4 week lead time on custom stuff, is that still current?
Turns out exactly as expected except can't test until the vehicle is back ambulatory, but w/o the boots and plate the transfer case does now move in all directions, all gears. But the part mentioned specifically at 4crawler makes it necessary to contact him directly, turns out I have the "common" mount where both shifters are secured in a single plate with 6 bolts, gotta find out what my options are, could just cut the floor for clearance but been bashing the goobering I found, don't want to add any more to it.. The pic shows how they abominated the shifters with a torch or something to get the 5 speed to work, didn't do the transfer shifter. I should be able to find an original stock shifter replacement at the salvage yard right??

Anyway here's a pic, looking for what my options are going to be. Don't know what tranny I have, door pillar says W56, and the darn Haynes manual with all it's exploded views doesn't depict a transmission with the common shift plate anywhere.. Oh ya tearing out the axle shaft instructions, they just don't apply or work...
