doesn't look like ITB's, and I bet it's a 4.0, not a 3.0.

Looks to me like a dry sump oil system too.

IMO, it's impossible to make 400hp from a 3.0L v6 without some form of power adder. Just not gonna happen.

350z's are heavily massaging the VQ35DE 3.5L and still barely making 300whp.

i've been toying with the idea of building a carb intake for my 3.4, but that's way cooler...

Yikes.. might be possible running nitro or non-pump gas...

nope. He'd have to be running like 40:1 compression to make it even close to possible. You MIGHT gain an additional 10% power with higher compression, but those guys probably run on C16, which would probably only allow for 12 or 13:1 compression......nowhere near 400hp.

only way I'd believe it is if I saw a certified engine dyno with video.

Its all about fuel/air delivery. It says near 400 HP and it definately looks like they solved the intake runner design problems with this engine lol. If F1 can push over 800bhp out of 1.8L dont see why TRD cant get 400out of 3.0L. But with a bottom end rebuild it doesnt look like a project for the novice engine tuner.

Power = Torque X RPM.

Exactly. Just moving the torque up the RPM band 10% is a 10% increase in power. Increasing torque and the ability for the engine withstand high RPM's will have a huge increase on power. F1 is a great example of engines that really make little torque but rev so high it's ridiculous. Many of Honda's engines are a more practical example. No one said this engine has great around town drive-ability characteristics, a compromise that will almost always erode higher RPM torque and corresponding power. It just needs to scream to produce loads of power and win races.

The reason we see people with street engines are making much less horsepower with lots of mods is they can't custom forge new crankshafts, rods, and pistons, cast a new intake, etc... so they can rev to 9K+. Not to mention smog restrictions which typically turn into intake/exhaust restrictions also limiting peak RPM. They are working with pushing the piston down harder instead of pushing harder AND moving the piston much much faster like is done in a race engine like this.

As to whether it's fully 400HP, well he did win...

I'm sorry dude.....but you CANNOT compare F1 ingenuity and engineering to that engine. There are so many tricks and engineering gimmicks F1 engines have, I can't even begin to imagine how much that 3L would cost if in fact it was a 400hp unit. A couple thousand, at least.

There is no way that engine makes 400hp. If theres a dyno and video for that specific engine that proves me wrong, I'll eat my socks. I can guarantee you that it doesn't make 400hp.

And besides, for off-roading, a super high revving motor with no torque would NOT be optimal.

and you believe it's an Ivan Stewart motor? Really? The picture of it is in front of a garage of a brick house. I'm gonna go with a no on that one.

Ivans v6 3.0 engines before he got his v8 in about 97 were 300-350 hp.

FYI: http://www.protruck.com/trophy.html 4.9L V8, 500hp.

Why would they use what is quite possibly the worst motor Toyota ever designed? (3vze)

Sounds quite a bit more reasonable to me.

They had a big wallet and it will still outpower a 22r no matter how much money you throw at it. And those were the only two choices.

I'm not bidding on it. Just making the point that high horsepower numbers are possible when you don't have to worry about, for example, lasting longer than one race as opposed to hundreds of thousands of miles.

Anyway, moot point, none of us are going to buy it and dyno it.

Read the ad a little closer:

Capable of nearly 400 horsepower on a full on race tune...
And it did say it was a 3.0, they gave this engine up to race another class that allowed for the 3.4. Also, read the rest of the ad:

The heads are one-off castings for high flow with matching intakes, dry sumped, girdled block, etc.
Doesn't sound as sketchy as some of you are making it sound. I'm not bidding on it, but I love it! Also, I bet that thing sounds wicked!

There is nothing stock on that 3.0, and i believe it's making over 350hp on race gas, it probably12 or 13:1 comp ratio (30-40% power increase right there) , dry sump oil pan (another 15-20hp increase) heads which will outflow ANY 3.0 head out there (probably rivaling a nascar head, you guys do realize this is custom one-off) and the intake is probably also giving another 15-20% hp increase. The full out race computer helps as well.
This motor is basically a smaller EFI version of say a nascar engine, which is 5.7L and makes 650+HP.... i believe this one can make over 350....
