Their purpose is to keep moisture and dust off of the timing belt components. Which they do fairly well, so long as they're all still in one piece. I can't see new ones necessarily doing a better job than old ones that still work though. The ones on my 88 are still holding up pretty good. I haven't had to replace any of them yet.
Anyways, some of them are foam rubber and some are hard rubber. And they're not necessarily cheap either. There's 11 of them ranging in price from $.82 to $37.54 each. I'm pretty sure their compositions are as follows:
I know this is an old thread but I’m running into this now as I do my cam and crank seals. The gasket on my backing plate is almost all the way gone and there was a bunch of dirt and moisture trapped behind the timing cover so my guess is that this is the culprit. These gaskets are discontinued from Toyota now does anyone have any ideas on what to use to replace it? I was thinking of just getting high temp self adhesive rubber stripping in place of it since it’s only used to keep junk out of the timing belt. Any ideas would be appreciated.
If a rubber seal becomes hard or deformed you can sometimes get some of the softness and shape back by dropping it in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes. Turn the burner off just before you put the piece in.
