3VZE Strange starting problem - then runs fine
Tried searching for some answers to this one but couldn't find my exact issue.
1991 4Runner 3VZE manual, 263K. On rare occassions (which are now increasing in regularity) when attempting to start, the engine cranks fine but acts as if its struggling to catch. The engine has a pretty good shudder while this is happening. It may catch for a brief second, but then immediately dies. This can occur at absolutely any time - doesn't matter if the engine or air temp is hot or cold. Sometimes, but not always, I get a CEL. If I tap on the gas pedal a couple times while cranking, it'll fire right up and idle normally. Once its idling properly, I have ZERO drivability issues. Power is where it should be thoughout the entire range, no stumbling, no power loss at any RPM in any gear - ever, no CEL, and my gas mileage is really pretty good at around 20mpg on the hwy.
I did your basic $100 tune-up about a month ago - oil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters. Its otherwise running like a champ - just this weird starting issue.
I pulled the code for the CEL and got code 52 (only). I know this is something with the KS circuit/system, but given the complete lack of drivability issues that appear to common with a bad KS, it seems as if something else may ultimately be leading to the triggering of that code. I have pulled the EFI relay and disconnected the battery for several minutes, but the same code will come back IF I get the same starting problem.
Any input greatly appreciated.
