3VZE knocking,give me some advice.

Hey guys,

I have a 90 4Runner with the 3VZE and 142k.

I have owned this truck less than a month.

a couple days ago,I heard a knock from the top of the motor when starting it up in the morning. It quickly went away as the truck warmed up.Oil was about 1.5qt low so I got her up to par again immediately.

It has gotten worse, and now it will do it when it is warm at times. It is definitely coming from the top of the motor, and it seems to have a bit less power.Today it stalled on me.It has never done this before. It did, however, start right back up.But stalled once more on the way home.

My dad seems to think it's a valve, and told me to tear it down and inspect. Can the valve covers be removed on a 3VZE without removing the intake?

And I'm a bit worried about the oil being 1.5 qts low.I hadn't been driving the truck,my mom was I've been using her car since the mileage is better.

Can you guys give me some advice or ideas on what it could be?

Thanks,

Logan

It is a vavle sticking. It happenend to me. On the overhead cam the valve spring and cap sit in a recessed hole with the adjustment shim on top. The valve gets stuck down in the hole. Usally when the adjustment is out or the engine has been overrevved. Anyway you need to remove the head to pop it back up and probably need a new cam, as the shim is bouncing around in there. Mine was the passenger side front and it sounded like a rod knockning.

Yeah first i thought rod and then I noticed it was coming from the valve cover.

Any idea how much a new cam would cost,

and how much would I expect to be charged at a shop to fix this?

Ok I wanna get this fixed.

I'm living with my mom right now, and have no tools, and no garage.

So It's probably going to go to the shop.

how much should I expect to pay?
