Does the 3VZ-E have any sort of rev limiter? Today in the auto shop at my high school, I got my 94 pickup running again (cleaned and adjusted the throttle body) and once it got to operating temperature, the teacher revved the engine to over 6000 rpm's (redline is 5700) and nothing seemed to stop it from revving even higher. I don't have any idea if it has a limiter or not.

I think there is a rev limiter, close to 7k rpm. I know I have taken mine to 6500rpm a few times. Its good to rev it up there every so often, blow all the crap out

why on earth did your teacher rev it that high? i dont have anything revving an engine high, but over the redline is just wrong, especially when its not his.

Yeah, there is a rev limiter. I've heard it. This guy at a stop sign killed it like 4 times, then the last time he just put it to the floor, and bounced rev limiter a couple times and dumped the clutch. Poor thing....

Rev limiter is about 6300 rpms. It doesn't hurt anything to do that OCCASIONALLY as long as the engine is up to operating temperature. Regular trips into the red will reduce engine life.

He said that its good for the engine, but I really wished that he hadn't done that. All i need is to send a piston through the oil pan......

Another thing is that after he revved it that high, it started to idle low and seemed to sputter a bit, but I think that the EFI was just like because it had never gone to those rpm's before. I turned it off and then restarted it and everything was back to normal

Yep, they have a rev limiter. My 3.0 hits it quite often.

Redline is 5700 huh? Interesting...I would have thought at least 6000ish.

Anyway the rev limiter on mine is above 7000, somewhere between there and 8000. It's below 8000 though from what I can tell, the needle's hard to judge when it's bouncing around up there.

Anyone ever heard of usable redline? No...I did not just make that up! It's the name of the rpm range after the redline starts and before the rev limiter kicks in FYI.

I have talked to mechanics, they say its fine to do it every so often. Won't hurt it unless you are constantly banging on the top end.

not sure what the exact RPM limit is but the miles per hour is like 105
not sure mechanics should be doin that either. I do it, but on my car and my car only.

Are you sure you didn't hit the governor, not the rev limiter?

Most vehicles these days have a top speed governor that kills the fuel pump at so many mph. Rarely too far above 100 mph that I've heard of.

I never take my poor old 3slow over about 4000 RPM. Typically I shift at about 3000 - 3500. I've got 220,000 on the original head gaskets and I just know one of these days it's going to blow.

yeah at 4000 the 3.0 sounds like its saying "SHIIIFFFTTT" and its hard hearing that when your going uphill on the freeway. you almost have to let your foot off the gas and let it shift (auto) and then you feel like it jumps and is happy again. but yeah, ive never taken it past 4, and dont ever want to. no need for that. if something happened, i could never forgive myself.

I've only had mine up to just past 5,000 a couple times. I go over 4,000 quite a few times, and most always over 3,000. I've never found the rev limiter, and I've never really wanted to.

my '88 4runner hasn't hit a rev limiter, but i regularly rev up to 5000 before i let the tranny shift. it has over 220,000 miles on it and is one of the best running 3.0's my boss has ever seen,even with an automatic instead of a manual. The 3.0 is designed for higher revs, with a lightweight timing belt instead of a chain. its powerband doesn't kick it until about 3500 anyway.

Yeah I'm sure that I didn't hit the governor. It was revved at a standstill in the autoshop
