37" daily driver gearing
Alright. Im gonna run 37" MTRs and it will be a daily driver. 1991 4Runner 3.slow. Im wondering if I should go with 5.71s for the power and better milage with it bering a daily driver or just go with 5.29s. And if your just gonna say 5.29s the 5.71s are to weak it doesnt matter what size tire. I want someone who runs 37s and uses both and i want to know milage. Thanks

If you're worried about mileage, get a car.
Seriously - you can go to a few gear calculators and plug in your tire size and a few different gear selections and find various engine speeds (RPM's) for given speeds which may shed some light on how it might affect your mileage i.e. how much your engine will be revving. But the one thing to keep in mind about the 3vze is it seems to do well with lower (read higher RPM) gearing on these relatively heavy trucks. It's about trade offs. If you were doing lots of city driving, the 5.71's would really help acceleration and make things easier on the engine when acclerating and your city mileage would be better despite the higher revving due to the engine not working as hard. If you were doing lots of highway driving the 5.29's, assuming the RPM's aren't too low at various speeds in various gears and the truck could still turn 'em alright, would be the gears of choice.
I guess I just find it funny that you use "37's" and "daily driver" in the same sentence. I mean I guess you gotta get by somehow, but it just sounds funny - like you need 37's to get around. I guess you can just go over the traffic now?

^^whays that funny? I run 36s on a daily driver. Than on weekends, I wheel the piss out of it. Just so happens I dont want to change from 33 ATs to 36 MTs everytime I want to wheel. "DD" doesnt mean its a street queen.

No I get ya Tacoma750 - it just sounds funny in the same sentence, that's all. I know some guys need to do double duty.....but most guys I know/see who do the double duty thing run no larger than 35's.

Depends on what tranny you have.
Manual: 5.71's and you'll do fine
Auto: fugheddaboudit. You will NEVER see the overdrive and you'll cook the tranny.
As for the 5.29/5.71 strength debate, do some research. They both have 7 tooth pinions - the diameter can only change a little and them still work. The teeth on the ring gear are considerably larger than on, say, 4.10's which are considered "indestructable". If you are concerned about R&P strength, you have to stay higher than 4.88 (8+tooth pinion). Some pictures:

well at the moment its an auto but thats soon to change. It will only be my daily drive as well as wheeler because im in high school. Im thinking I'll go with 5.71s then. it deffinatly doesnt mean street queen . Im worried about milage because Im in highschool.

Well I don't DD mine but I do put 300 miles on it or more when I take it out for a weekend of wheeling. I run 5.29's and it's fine. I get 15mpg consistently. It won't get out of it's own way but that's just how it is. I cruise at 70 mph and the tach is turning 3100 rpms. I wouldn't want my gearing any lower.. 5.71's suck...ever tried getting a third set up with them into a housing????

yea man..honestly you need to rethink your build. You obviously dont have the funds to PROPERLY run 37s. Your IFS is stock, your brakes are stock, your gears are stock. 37s cost a lot of money besides just installing the tires.

I second the brakes upgrade w/ 37;s.
i put my 33x10.5's on today from 28's and i can definately tell a difference in reduced braking power. The acceleration/slowness not so much, besides being in a gear lower than normal driving, i kinda like it for city driving, keeps me from speeding to much.

Flygtenstein here DD's 37" MT/R's on a 95, 3.4, 5.29's. Not sure on his mileage, but fairly certain he said something about 20.
If you're worried about it, just get the 5.71's. They aren't weak at all, its an issue that has been beaten to death. Turns out "they're weak" is just internet bull.

Its not the the 5:29s are weak...its that USUALLY when people run 4:88s, they run smaller tires than when they have 5:29s and deeper. OBVIOUSLY bigger tires=more wieght,more stress. So they are being abused more. They arent weaker by any means..but to the interweb wheeler who heard what had happened to jimbobs cousins dogs owner...they are weak.

Im talking about tire running 37s with UKM's setup. So, whats going on is I have two 4 cyl thirds with old worn out arbs and 5.71s i got cheap. Im planning on running them with the auto till i get the manual and will then switch to 6cyl and high pinion thirds with 5.29s and arbs. I can live with 15 mpg becuase I get around 13 right now

He's gotten plenty of straight answers. Run either 5.29's, or 5.71's. Both are great, 5.71 will make it less of a dog on hills, but rev higher when trying to hit highway speeds (75 or so). 5.29's will be worse on the hills, but better top end. What more do you want to know?
Mileage is what it is. You can't run a big tire and expect to get civic mileage. Gearing down will give you the best power and mpg's for what you've got. I recommend the 5.71's for this application.

He has an auto. Guys are running 33" tires and 5.29's with the automatic. So jump that up to a 37" tire and go with 5.71's truck will be a complete dog. If you had a 5sp it would be a perfect match.

With 5.71s 37"s and a 3.slow 5spd what would the rpms be at 70? Anybody know?
EDIT: anyway to custom make or have custom made some R&Ps? Like say......5.50s?lol
