If you have a 5speed, you'll want to regear, if you have an automatic, your really going to want to regear. If you have a auto, might want to look into a tranny cooler.

I have 33 x 12.5's, 5-speed (swapped from auto), and 4.56:1 gearing. It's fine for the most part; however, 4.88:1 would be more ideal. If you have the 4.10's or 4.30's...good luck on your hill climbs.

I'm running 33x10.5" BFG's with stock gears and 130k on the drivetrain without any problem. My 95 4Runner has 4.88 gears stock and the 4.88 diffs are not regearable. Check out this thread:

You'd be looking at probably around $600 in parts alone to regear...I'd spend the money on something else.

33x11.50? They don't make that size ... or do you mean 285/75-16?
How much lift do you have? I'm thinking you will need at least 2", and the backspacing of the rims will be critical.
Go down to a 33x10.50, and they will fit much better - the 1" of width makes a HUGE difference.
For a manual, you want 4.88 for 33's; automatic, 5.29 or even 5.71

Now I'll just be a conformist and run 12.5's.
At least I can find a 12.5" used spare easily.

when cruising
When your crusing at a moderate speed you will gain mpg's because the ratio of how much harder your engine is working versus how far you go with each rotation of the tire is in favor of the tire versus the old setup. So 33"s are 103.62"s in diameter (approx) and the 31"s are 97.34"s in diameter (approx) so you gain about 6.28"s of travel per rotation of the tire with the 33"s versus the 31"s (stock) and the engine is not working that much harder to push those.

First - you mean circumference, not diameter. The diameter of a 33 is, well, 33"... diameter * pi = circumference
Next - it all depends on terrain. If you live where it is FLAT, then, yes, most of the resistance is from the wind and you may see better mileage due to the higher effective gearing. If it's NOT flat or it's windy where you live, you will see WORSE mileage, because the higher effective gearing reduces the torque available to push against that resistance and you will have to use more throttle. Throttle position has MUCH more of an effect on MPG than RPM...

You can run any tire you want on any gear ratio you want.
What is recommended here is what others have found to work well. I run 33's, 4.88's and a 5speed on a 22re. It runs just like it did stock, which is slow. But, its not hard on the clutch or motor. I know a guy running 36's on stock gears with a 22r. It is REALLY slow, but he doesn't mind.
I know another guy running 35's on a 2F motor, and he gets 16-17 mpg, while running 4.10's. That is really high for that engine, and, while he is slower than molasses, he gets good mpg.
There is a lot of good advice here, but you gotta decide what works best for your truck and wallet.
