I was wondering if there were any issues with putting a tire of this size on a stock height, stock engine, and stock gearing?

It was a tire option on the later model toyotas, I dont think it will be any problem with your truck...

I run the same size Definity MT's form pep boys. Been runnin them for the past 5 months. No problems yet. I Think I would ideally like to bump to 4.56 gears but the 4.10's work fine for now, just less power. I like the way the 31's sit and ride.

those are the same tires i was thinking of getting, just waiting for the buy 3 get one free deal....

you will be "slightly" overgeared, but I think most people 'upgrade' to 31's on their stock trucks eventually... anything bigger and you will take a performance hit... and open up an expensive can O worms to correct the issues.

Toyota seemed to think 31's took a V6 and 4.56.

You're going to feel a pretty dramatic loss of power. RPM on the freeway will be about 500 less, which is probably going to put you well out of the powerband, and you will be downshifting a lot more.

I'm assuming you have a manual transmission, that will help.

Is it liveable? Sure.

Should you regear in the future? IMHO, definitely.

I wouldnt be concerned unless you live in a hilly area. I have 33 x 12.50's bfg at's at's. I have a fresh 22re with an engnbldr cam with stock 4:10 in my 87 runner. I live in the flattest part of southeast texas but have no problem cruisin in 5th all day long. 4th comes in handy on steep bridges. I'd give it a whirl before getting worried

Let's be clear rbmoomba - the "flattest part of SE TX" is pretty damn flat! By your own admission, the steepest/highest hill you have is an overpass! An they're not steep!

Toyota trucks from 89 on are designed to accommodate 31" tires, so no problems with handling, braking, etc. Power-wise, you'll want 4.56 gears as soon as you can manage it, 'cause with the 4.10's it's slow and the shift points are wrong. You'll notice it immediately.

i have 95 pu reg cab 4 banger, so same thing as you. i got 31x10.50 ats and it does fine, i really dont know whtat its like with stock tires cuz i bought it like this. youll be fine. a little slower, but fine. i still get abuto 21 mpg highway drivin, about 24-25 interstate.

4.10's and 31's is fine. You're not a hurtn a thing. its gonna be a bit slower for sure but i dont think its drastic. I have a 260 cam in my rig which has given me a bit more use out of 5th gear.

before the 31's I topped the rig out at 90mph.. now i can "cruise" at 70 comfortable up and down hills in 5th (ie with the cam) but before the cam lil more hopping between 4th and 5th.. or just stay in 4th lol

ive gotten used to it and in town the acceleration is still very acceptable.

Economy wise, no change in mpg. I average 20+

I had a heavier 2nd gen 4Runner with 31s, 22re and 4.10. I live in a hilly area and it was miserable to drive. It was very definitely worth the $350 to regear to 4.56. I sometimes think I should have gone all the way up to 4.88 with 31s. If I ever go the 33s, I will get 5.29 gears.

i have a 90 22re with 4.10s and 33..12.50 and there is not much of a problem. Yeah less power but i still can climb hills no prob. I have to down shift to fourth if it is really steep but thats it.

My 94 has 33x12.50 with a 22re and 4.88 gears. Its dog piss slow, but so what. It can climb like a mofo, and looks good while doing it!

31's are no issue with regards to rubbing. I ran mine for a while (about a month) with the 4.10's and could really tell a difference over the stock tires. When you get a chance regear it to 4.56's and you'll be good to go. There are some other things you can do to increase the performance of the 22re but not much. I just did the supra MAF upgrade and it's a different truck now with regards to acceleration and cruising, just another option for you.

Oh and if you're in the market for tires it pays to take a look at treadwright.com for some darn good retreads.

One last thing of note here is as soon as you get tires, then look to regear, you're going to want to start upgrading other things.

im running 31's on my stock 4.10 geared pickup. i live in mn, and i drive on some steep hills. the only difference is that i downshift alot more than some of my other friends trucks. it doesnt bug me in the least. thats how learned how to drive a manual transmission in the first place.

I'm about to install some of these on my stock 93 pickup V6.
Auto tranny.

Any advice ? Or I'll be fine. Yes I know power will downgrade a bit and maybe gas too. But I'm not picky about that.

I have a 94 with the 22re it has 33x15.5x15 super swampers on it and I can ride at 70 on the interstate. I still get in the 20mpg range. I do have to downshift on hills.

as long as you have 4.56 gears you'll be fine, i have 31x9.5 with stock 4.10's, getting 15mpg city consistently, 19-20 on the highway
