#3 cyl bad compression 22RE
Hey, I have a friend with '00 Taco with the 22RE. He got a check engine light on, took it in to a shop and the code was for a misfire.
They found bad compression on #3 and told him it could be a valve issue, but have to pull the head off to know for sure what's going on.
All sounds pretty legit, and I know the shop, they are straight shooters, but one thing I thought was strange/kind of crazy was that the guy told him the flat rate book time for the job was 30hrs!!!!
Now I know how the flat rate book works, but 30hrs to pull a head off a 4 cylinder engine??
The guy told him it would probably be more like 5 or 6, but just wanted him to know that the book shows 30hrs, so there is a chance it could start getting up there, depending on what they find or get into.
He's holding off for a minute, but needs to do something because his inspection is at the end of August.
Just figured I'd see if there were any known issues with #3 on the 22RE or anybody knew of any oustanding campigns for anything related to this.
The thing has 150K on it so I doubt Toyota would goodwill anything, but just throwing it out there.
I told him to just take it to Toyota for that frame rust check they are doing, maybe if it's rusted bad enough they would take it off his hands and he wouldn't have to worry about the #3 cyl.
Had another friend get his truck bought off him on the spot, due to too much rust on the frame.
Anyway thanks for any heads up or any input on the 30hr flat rate charge.

Yea it's gotta be that 3rzfe. 2.7 litre 4 cylinder.
The quote is probably to renew all of the valves, but still seems high to me. 20 hours to completely rebuild the head including R&R head is more like it.
The shop can easily confirm it is a valve by doing a cylinder leakdown test. It is a basic test that will tell them exactly where the compression leak is. I do know that those 2.7 engines will burn exhaust valves if the clearances are too tight.

Damn I knew it was the 2.7, but he kept telling me it was a 2.4. Truck wasn't in front of me so.....
Yeah I think they did a leakdown after they found low compression, that's why they said they thought it was a valve issue.
What kind of labor do you think he'd be looking at to replace a burnt valve/valves on just that cylinder. Like maybe 10 or so?

i might be able to see 30 man-hours for removing the head, blueprinting... including replacing all the valve seats, valves, porting and polishing the runners, 5 angle valve job, gasket matching and reinstalling everything.
but 30 for troubleshooting? NOPE!
at the prevailing rate of around 80 per hour, that'd be 2400 bucks. you can replace the engine in whole for nearly that.

I wasn't aware that Toyota made a 2.4 for that generation other than the 22re or the 2.4 diesel....the latter not being available in the U.S.
