3.0L timing belt replacement help

Hello everyone. New to these forums but old to wrenching.

Bought a 4runner SR5 couple months ago and the timing belt snapped on me last thursday.

Got everything stripped down and now I am ready to put the new belt on. Ive read alot about how to do this but most of the people have a good belt on that they are replacing.

I (stupidly) am just replacing the belt for now because I dont have the time or money to buy a new water pump etc...

Now heres where I am stuck, Im trying to get my pulleys lined up before I slip on the belt, But my 2 cam shafts are not lined up, so I cant tell if they are both on the right cycle. I thinking that maybe one is 180' out from the other.

How can I be sure that they are both lined up on the right cycle? Is it even possible that they can be out if both the lines are pointing in the right direction?

and a side note, I have tons of greese all over everything in there, thinking maybe one of the bearings was leaking but Ill deal with that later.

Thanks for all your help.

If the marks on the cam pulleys are pointing straight up then they're right. If they're not turn the camshafts until they are.
You can have the crank pulley out, it has to be lined up with the #1 cylinder at tdc on the compression stroke. The distributor rotor will be pointing at #1 terminal then. It's possible to get it at tdc on the exhaust stroke, in which case the rotor will be pointing at #4 terminal. This would not be good.

If you want I can email you a copy of the engine section from the manual. PM me an email address if that would help.

timing belt

Hopefully I can be of some help.
The cam sprockets are mounted to the camshafts with a bolt.
You first need to slip the crank pulley on with the keyway that locks it to the crankshaft. Then make damn sure the notch on the crank pulley outside edge is lined up with the "0" mark on the small lower plastic timing cover.
The cams have a lock pin that you can see just outside of the cam pulley bolt washers. They should both be pointing up,... as well as the lines on the outside of the cam pulley edge aligning up with the upper marks on the top tin timing cover backing plate.
