3.0 truck missing and stalling

I have a 1989 SR5, 2WD, 5spd, 3.0 truck with 260,xxx miles. The truck has the original head gaskets!!! The cel was flashing so I jumped the connector and came up with code 22. The truck will hesitate from time to time. Every once in a while and becoming more frequent. The truck will stall and not restart when stopping in the morning. The engine will not start for a few minutes. Then it will start but have to keep the pedal to the floor it will not rev past 1000 rpm and black smoke will pour out of the exhaust. It takes a few minutes and will clear up. But it will hesitate when giving it gas for a few miles after that. I hooked my OBD2 scanner to the truck, it will not communicate? I replaced the air filter and ohmed out the air box sensor. I also checked the tps and replaced that. I also used propane and checked for vacuum leaks, found none. Also check the brake booster check valve and line, the brake booster holds vacuum. I have a spare engine with 60,000 miles. I swapped out the throttle body thinking there may be something wrong with the air valve. Now the engine starts and revs around 1800 and just surges and it you give it gas it will pop and not rev up. Any ideas???

First of your truck is obd 1 and cannot communicate with an obd2 scanner. Secondly have you checked your fuel pressure at the cold start injector banjo? It is possible you have one or more leaky injectors dumping fuel into the cylinder causing it to flood. I don't know a code 22 off hand but if its for a rich mixture I would say definatley pressure. Also is the smoke really black or grey with a blue tint? Blue tint indicates unburned fuel, purple is burning oil, white is obviously coolant.

Code 22 means coolant temp sensor, the ecu cannot meter fuel/air properly if this sensor is faulty. Check wiring harness and test by putting into hot water and read the resistance curve compared to temp. I'm sure you can find the specs and more detailed procedure elsewhere on yotatech.

What was the point of getting the code if you weren't going to pay any attention to it?

The scanner is an OBD1/OBD2. One thing I did forget to mention! I do pay attention to the codes. I checked the ecm coolant sensor and it checked out fine. Just in case I swapped it out with the spare one. I will check the fuel pressure.

Sounds like a LOT of issues for only having a code 22.

What????? Obd1/2 snanner there is no such thing I'm aware of, and I used to be a tech and have seen dozens of types of scanners. Also there is no plug for obd2 on your truck. All diagnostics are done through the little box labeled diagnostics, the one you jumped out to get the CEL to flash, when you did this you were closing the circuit to engage the OBD1 to read.

I never said there was an OBD2 plug on this truck. Of course there will only be a OBD1 plug. Yes my scanner does 1/2 systems. It has additional plugs to accommodate different systems. If you pay $2500 for a unit rather then going to Sears any buying the $200 unit. You will be able to read all systems. I have used it on OBD1/OBD2. My buddy has the same unit from Snapon and uses it all the time at the dealership he works at. Yes I know the location of the ecm diagnostic plug. Yes I have used the shady tree mechanic way of using a jump wire and counting the lights.

Not attacking you here but go back and read your first post about attaching an obd 2 scanner. Also who buys automotive tools at sears, craftsmen is junk. And I'm assuming your reffering to a snapon solus scanner, this is a very good scanner however a $2500 scanner is relatively cheap when you consider a high end genisys scanners with full the software package gets close to $7500. Lastly if there is a port for obd1 would you enlighten me as to where my understanding was there was none.

Really though best of luck with the problem, if you get farther along in your diagnostics and have more questions I'm more then happy to help.

My scanner is at least 7 or 8 years old now. The port that guys use to jump with a wire is the port that my Toyota OBD1 specific plug connects to. It picks up and reads that is is a Toyota but will not communicate with the scanner. I have never had issues with the scanner not reading before. Sometimes things are lost in translation when typing and reading. I appreciate your thoughts and efforts.
