3.0 rebuild complete
Just finished 3.0 rebuild. Being a medium and heavy duty truck mechanic for
the past 28 years, this became a little different challange.
First off, I would like to thank Death Couger and Mt. Goat for some much
needed input. I also would like to thank everyone on Yotatech for all the great information I have found here, there is a lot knowledge on this site.
I started this project with blown head gaskets ( imagine that! ). While I had
the heads off, I looked at the short block sitting in frame for a few days.
I finally said to myself - why not? So I pulled the rest of the engine out. So
then came the usual machine shop deal - align bore, cylinders bored .040 over
block decked and heads rebuilt. Bought Rock master kit with t/belt and w/p.
Assembly went very well. Set in all back in and added oil and coolant, much
needed stuff. Started it up,checked for leaks, set timming and on the road we
went. Sorry, didn't take any photos - if you see one 3.0, you seen them all. I did use new head bolts form Rock also.

Congrats on your rebuild. It's a nice feeling when it starts, isn't it?
I'm curious how you handled getting the valves adjusted. Did you do it yourself? If so, what tools and techniques did you use? When I replaced my head gaskets, I found replacing shims to be the most difficult task of all. The neighbor's kids learned some new words that day! I'd love to know what someone with considerable experience did to get the job done.

To make things easy,I set the short block back in the truck with out the heads on. This
made it easy to get to bellhousing bolts, starter and A/C compressor.( I'm all about easy)
I adjusted the valves with the heads on the table. Put cams in,measured valve clearance, removed cams and measured shimms. Used formula in manual to figure out which shimms to use. I moved some shimms around, put cams back in and measured again. I had to buy (5) shimms. 5 out of 12 isn't bad. Now the shimms are set,put heads
on and keep on gettin up.

That sure does sound easier than adjusting the valves in place. Compressing the springs and getting the shims out by myself was a bear. I didn't use the technique you described because I was concerned the clearances might change after the heads got torqued on. Did you find any differences at all, or were they all exactly the same?
