3.0 to 22re 'downgrade'?

How tuff would it be to remove the (locked up) 3.0 from a 90 4Runner (5spd) and put a 22re in there? Has anyone done it? I know it would not be a rocket, but I prefer life with a 22r over a 3.0. I searched for a little while but did not turn up an article.

You would have to weld in new motor mounts (different location) and get a trans crossmember for a 22r truck, or use the r150 and find a r151 bellhousing to make it fit. A pain for a little bit less power. Just save up for the 5vz.

If your ditching the 3.0, I would just go for a 3.4 swap, but man do I love my 22R, so I know what you mean. I def would NOT waste the time rebuilding that 3.0 though.

If cost is not an issue do the 3.4, but it is hard to beat a 22RE.

Swapping to a 22RE would be an upgrade.

On the flip side, how difficult would it be to take a regular 22re/5pd 4runner and swap the V6 5/spd into it?

Actually it's easty to beat a 22RE. All you need is a 3vze.

I think he's talking about using the huge mass of the 3.turd to physically smash the 22r. Like using a sledge hammer to smash things.

+1 on do the 3.4 swap

I am doing the 22R swap instead of 3.0 for a number of reasons.
1) Cost I have a collection of 5 22REs
2) 22E Rock solid design and life. 3.0 are likes Ford you either Hate'm or Love'm.
3) I have a 3.0 right now without a HeadGasket problem, It has the other 3.0 problem the death knock. These things throw rods.
4) Look into the machine cost aloneto rebuild a 3.0 and 22R and for that price you can buy a rebuilt 22R.

Just to pad my post count...

I've never owned a 3.0. But I have owned a 22R, a 22RE, and the 2.7l 4cyl (The heir apparent to the 22R. Absolutely great engines. If I had a 3.0, I'd probably swap to a 22R, too.
