Don't know how much this will help, but...
I'm not sure if it was limited to engine type or what anymore. My friend has an 89 2WD 22R(carbed) that has the 8" Diff and it's 4-pinion from the looks of the case. That said, I have no idea if it's the original, but I suspect it is due to the fact that it was the original timing chain we changed out at 275k. Obviously the biggest problems will be the gear ratio (3.73 in the case of my friend's truck) and the axleshafts only being 5 lug. Otherwise, I suspect the housing will work in the usual suspects.

Except the 2wd is a spring under, and the 4wd is spring over.
4wd uses a lever style E-brake, 2wd uses a cable that runs 1/2 way up the truck on each side 2wd is 5 lug, 4x4 is 6 lug 2wd uses smaller brakes (10" i think?), 4wd uses 11" brakes BTW. If you are talking 4Runner, then yes. 2wd is the same as 4wd. My info is about the trucks.
