2wd Bed vs 4wd Bed question
Afternoon boys.
I am new to this forum, but I think I will be spending a fair bit of time on it, as I just picked up a 1986 4x4 long box.
The bed on my truck has had it, rust city. I have found a clean 2wd box/bed (not sure about the year). It doesn't have the flares above the rear wheels like the 4wd version.
Has anyone seen flares that will fit on a 2wd box to give it the look of the 4wd flared sides?
Another side question, this truck has the automatic transmission (w/ overdrive). How reliable are these transmissions and is there specific maintenance I should do right off the bat. (besides switching to a 5 speed LOL)
Cheers
and thanks in advance. I will post some pics as soon as I get the truck back from the safety inspection.

The only difference in the beds is long bed vs. short bed. 2wd and 4wd is the exact same.
The automatic was somthing toyota never really got right untill the late 90's. But that 22re aint no powerhouse, so it shouldnt be a problem..
If the fluid is dirty then consider flushing out the fluid. Do not hook it up to a machine. Undo the return line from the cooler and let it pump out the fluid, while you fill it up with new fluid (get a case of ATF). do this till clean fluid comes out, then make sure its the right level.

They must be, my 86 4x4 has a 2WD box on it and the back wheels stick out so far, and the flare is almost non existent. I am 100% positve there is a difference

The difference on the two boxes I have is about 3/4 of an inch. So I would like to put a set of flares on the new box to make up the difference. I have seen a lot of different flares available for the 4wd boxes, but none listed for the 2wd boxes. Maybe it will fit, without a problem, but would like to hear from someone who might have already tried this. I was planning on painting the flares to give it the 4wd box look.
Any recommended name brands for the flares?

I started to reply to this when you first posted , and then again before lunch today .. but wasnt able to finish .. now I will finish .
beds will mount the same .. 8 bolts . fuel filler pipe lengths are different , but not an issue .
fenders are ABSOLUTLY different .. and as you posted with your pics not flared or bumped out as much on the 2WD .. as compared with the 4WD .
this now we ALL know ..
as to your question on "fit" of the flares .. (bushwacker)
I dont think so .. they are not the same , and wont fit with out modification . because of the bumped out fender on the 4WD .. the flare fits around the flare , and fuel filler lid .. and the shapes are different .
**though**the lower part of the flare will have nothing to attach to on the 2WD bed , they may leave enough material on the flare .. but I dont think so ...
hope I didnt make things to confusing .. as I have only been interuped now 4 times on this !!!
