2nd gen 4runner longevity
So i'm thinking about buying a 1993 4runner and it has 225k on the clock. I know toyota's have a great repuation for running a long time but is 225k too high? any one else on here with higher miles than that? Thanks.

3VZ or 22RE?
Both have had plenty of examples of higher mileage vehicles. I think there is a thread(s) around here of vehicles with 300k+ on them with plenty of 3VZs as well. The issue with the 3VZ is the headgasket, but I am not one to speak on that topic with much authority.
The 22RE 4runner I have has 243k miles on it and before I tore into the front end to do the timing chain, it was running fine.

Sorry probably should have clarified that lol. It is the 3VZ. I used to have a 89 toyota pickup with the 22R in it and that motor was great. my 2nd favorite 4 cylinder motor lol. Just havent heard too much about the 3VZ V6

- Take the VIN to your Toyota dealer and check on the headgasket recall (and any other special service campaigns)
- When was the timing belt last done? That's a pretty big job and should be done every 70-90K miles or so.
- If you can, do a compression test. Ask about oil consumption (not that you'll necessarily get the truth)
- Look it over for rust, especially around/above the fender trim.
- How does the tranny sound and feel? The front and rear diffs? Drive shaft seem solid? Check the front CV shaft boots for cracking.
- Auto or manual? Auto at that mileage will likely be ready to cost more money in maintenance than a 5-speed.
- How does the interior look? Re-upholstering seats can cost more than changing the timing belt.
- Look it over for general maintenance, leaks, cleanliness in the engine compartment, hack jobs on the wiring, etc. You want as close to stock as possible, because no owner modifications will be as reliable as the original Toyota assembly.
The 3vz itself will be down on your list of worries at that mileage. If it's still running well (good compression and oil consumption), it's got a lot of miles in it yet. The body, interior, and other drive train components start presenting higher risks at this point.
