285/75 vs. 305/70

Right, few weeks time im going to have the rest of my lift installed on my 92 Surf.

tweaked torsion bars, BJ spacers an 4" rear coils. should give 3.5" on the front and....you guessed it!! 4" on the back.

Now, I reeeeeally wanna fit the 305/70/16's because ive seen one comparison picture an well, the 305s were noticably bigger an looked bada$$!

But the alloys on my truck have a huge negative backspace, my 265/75's are level with my arches (ive got a surf, not a 4runner) An the 265's rub on the inner arch, near the mudflaps! Ive got a TJM-15 front bumper so clearance there wont come into the equasion.

Am i going to be a total fool trying to get 305's?? Should i just get 285's or will i totally regret that?

Any opinions an views from anyone will be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

rub on the arches? what are the arches? show pictures. I have 265s stock on my US 4runner and they dont even come close to rubbing *stock backspacing 16" wheel)

maybe you should switch wheels first? I would try it.. and if it rubs weld some metal plates to space out the bumpstops

Have fun with getting 3.5" of lift out of the ball joint spacers. I had 2.5" and my cv's were at a horrible angle and the ride sucked. It'll be really hard on your whole front end.

Hi RodLeach & n16ht5,
RodLeach...are you running aftermarket or stock wheels? Stock wheels with 265/75's don't rub...like n16ht5's.
British terminology...like "hood" = "Bonnet"...Arches = tire wells.
May we see pics of your setup?

Yup!! What traben27 said. Best thing to do is keep your CV angles as close to stock as possible and do a 1-2" Body lift. Believe me, I have been researching this stuff for a week. Have the notes to prove it. I don't like body lifts, but they are inexpensive and you'll need it to clear those 285's or 305's. If you do a 1", you don't have to mod your truck in any other way. If you do a 2", you'll have to do a few things, but nothing major.

Hey guys, It will be 1.5" of lift on the BJ spacers and 2" on the torsion bars.

Im running these wheels.

I cant see any details of there offset, but they stick out flush with the arches! An Spot on 02Surf SSR-X 4xSport -

Thats one of the only front on pics i got since the bumper! It really dont show the wheels up on where they sit!

Djlarroc - I think im going to have to go down the body lift route. Already been pricing off 4crawlers site! Not sure to get 1" or 1.5"

Hmm..yeah that's a tough one. I'd say 1.5" if you do the 305's so you can reduce the lift from the torsion bars.. Or 1" if you do the 285's (which is still a very nice size, I'm looking at that size too). I've read, you really don't want to crank your t-bars more than 1" or you'll start tearing up suspension parts. Remember we have IFS.. only so much you can do with that.
