22rte smoking problem

So I've searched around the forums but can't quite find the issues I'm having...

Here's the situation...

Background:
I received an 86 22rte pickup with a blown turbo (wouldn't go over 30mph). I found a used turbo and put it in, runs strong but smokes a little. As far as I remember it didn't smoke with the broken turbo in it.

When it Smokes:
Whenever I am in neutral (on or off the gas = same amount) or have negative acceleration (ie letting off the gas down a hill or downshifting) BUT only once the motor is warmed up completely

Other Info:
-Smoke is blue, but has a slight plastic or rubbery smell (could be the smell of burnt oil, I'm not sure exactly what that smells like)
-I burn through a good amount of oil...I'd say a quart every 200 miles
-I'm getting horrible gas mileage - 6 or 7 mpg freeway with 33's

So my questions are...

-What are the possible causes? (I've heard oil ring on piston, turbo, or valves)

-How can I check any or all of the previously stated to determine what is needed?

I would start with a compression or leak down test.

if it wasn't smoking before the turbo swap, it makes me think it is possibly a seal in the turbo.

I was going to do a test but....my toolbox got stolen with my diagnostic stuff in it

and as far as the turbo being what is leaking, wouldn't I find oil in the tube going to the airbox? (the accordian style rubber tube that runs from the turbo to the side of the box)?????

it might be leaking oil to the exhaust side of the turbo. it could also have a crack in the housing.

Turbo oil seals. When it's warm, the oil's thinner, and pushes past the worn seals, especially during periods of high rpm (higher oil pressure), and low throttle opening (little exhaust gas). It usually leaks right into the exhaust from the exhaust housing, causing it to evaporate on the hot pipes rather than burn. This causes it to come out white sometimes blue, and stinks, but it doesn't smell like burnt oil.

CT-20 = Junk/ garbage...

I have read one post on Marlins site about the down pipe being too small, and it seems I've read where the CT20 chokes flow somewhere and that leads to the heat buildup and cracking...

Either put a CT26 on it, or a different custom exh. manni AND Turbo...

A guy on Ebay had rebuilt T-3's AND a custom manni for $400 but that was a coon's age ago.

But DO NOT spend money on a CT20!

I'm signed up on the 22rte site but haven't visited it much... that turbo is still working for now so I might just throw new seals in it. My new question is...am I in need of just new gaskets or the rubber o-ring style rings??

for one, running 33's with stock gears is going to make the engine pull hard all the time so you really need to re-gear to 4.56 or 4.88 (4.88 preferably) to get decent gas mileage. Secondly, sounds to me the turbo seals are worn if its only smoking when its warm because it would smoke when cold if the valve seals or rings were bad. Pull the intake pipes off the turbo and check the shaft play on the compressor wheel. Try to pull the shaft back and forth and up and down to see if there's considerable play. IF there is then it needs to be rebuilt

thanks for the info!! I'll see what I can do as far as finding some 4.88's. Would it do the same thing if I were to run dual t-cases as re-gear??

Also, same question from a few posts back...do I just need the gaskets or the whole rebuild kit with the big o-rings??

Personally, I would be surprised if you even find a CT-20 rebuild kit.

there's quite a few of them on ebay... I just don't really want to go through all the work needed to go to the bigger turbo right now....

Revisiting this from forever ago in case someone happens upon it while searching for some solutions! The o-rings were bad in that turbo, that's why it would create enough boost to put me over 40mph, but smoked like hell! I got a local replacement turbo for $40 so I just took the guy up on that. For that price and an immediate fix I couldn't argue! I've dropped it back to 31" tires after breaking a few cv's, and it's now just a fun hunt/adventure rig with a dodge as a daily driver / tow vehicle.
