I have a 1989 4x4 4 cyl. 5 sp. and i am looking into buying a cam. What cam would you recommend? I am mainly looking for low end power.

I have a mild crane cam in my truck! I run 31" tires and there are a ton of hills that I have to drive up everyday and it works great for me! But I would get a TRD stage 1 cam. If you get anything more than that like a 2 or 3 Ive heard that you will have a problem trying to get your truck to run right. Just something that a toyota tech has told me

for starters, it will never run like a v8.
that said, i have the 268 as you can see, and wish i'd have gone with the "crawler" ted offers. it may be harder to idle, but it should give more low end torque, which i like/need pulling the passes out here.
what i have was a noticeable improvement over stock. with other mods my gas mileage is going south, but i knew that going in. more radical cam wouldn't help that score at all!
i may get more out of this cam yet by playing with the timing, pushing beyond the 8 i'm at now (summer project).

With 36" tires, I would suggest gears before a cam...

I got the TRD stage one cam. Performs well, idles well, very slight difference in power. Was it worth it??? I don't know, maybe. It was cheap and easy to install and you don't have to modify anything (air filter, exhaust, AFM, Ect..) IMO you won't notice any 22R-E cam with those tires and a stock motor, unless maybe you have already re-geared.

I've got a Engnbldr 261 cam and couldn't be happier.

Did you see a nociable change in power woth the engnbldr cam? Was it woth it?

I run stock gears with 33x12.50's. I'm used to the performance now but when my buddy's ride in it, they can feel the difference. I drive pretty easy on it but if I need to get on it, it'll pick up harder in the powerband.

if memory serves, the trd is a rebadged crane cam.

there are lots of threads around here about the cams used in the 22re, and one (i can't find it yet but give me time) listed all the cams and their specs. i'll try to get back to you on it.

I had the TRD stage one cam, Downey header, 2 1/4" and 4.56 gears and 31's but mine was carbureted and 2wd. I noticed a huge difference when I changed just the header only and then the cam woke it up. The gears I did last and everything fell into place. I read somewhere that the TRD cam in the 22RE really doesn't help much unless you get it tuned.

Would i have to do any adjustments to my MAF with a header with a flowmaster, cam, and intake to get more fuel? If so, how do you know how much to adjust it?

You have an Air Flow Meter (AFM) not a Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF), and no adjustments needed. The AFM senses the additional air flow and increases the fuel to the injectors and the O2 sensor reads the resulting Air/Fuel ratio and compensates accordingly. At most, reset the ECU to make it relearn the new engine configuration.

I thought the meter bolted to the top of the air box was called a Mass Air Flow sensor. Is that what you were talking about, or is it something else?

Correctly it is called an Air Flow Meter, not a Mass Air Flow sensor. Yes it is bolted to the air box. Yes everybody knows what your talking about regardless of what you call it. You should not need to modify this unless you have done some nice modifications. It can be very costly to replace if you damage it while tweaking.

i run the 261 cam w/ big valves, header, flowmaster, downey intake and it runs great no adj. needed on the afm

I run Teds 270 RV cam and I like it.This cam opens up after 2000 rpm and beyond very well and terrific top end especially uphills on the highway.My gas mileage is 18-22 mpg. which to me is pretty good for having a bored out 22re.No tweaks on the AFM because im running a Supra AFM.
