As much as I wish this was my truck its a friends :/ but anyway, its an 1987 toyota 4x4 5 speed 22re single cab with 187k miles. and i noticed it was leaking water around the water pump. I offered to clean it up, swap it out, and do an oil change on it. but its starting to be a bit more complicated than that.

So far, i've replaced the water pump. and its no longer leaking, but its still leaking from an unknown location. I think its leaking from a radiator hose of some sort that is next to the water pump. But I wanted to check with 22re experts to be 100% sure. This is my first time working on a 22re, and its a breeze compared to my 3vze.

There is a small hose that connects to the right side of the timing cover(if you looking at the engine from the front) going to a steel water tube(right under the power steering pump). Thats hose is common to leak as most ppl forget its there and it never gets replaced. Theres quiet a few places the 22re can still leak from... Small hose under the intake manifold(thermostat bypass). Intake manfiold gasket itself. Heater hoses... Throttle body coolant hoses... Heater core... radiator... rad hoses... Head gasket...

yeah thats the one im assuming thats leaking. if you look at my video, it seems to be coming from that general direction. Any tips as to getting to it without pulling the distributor off? lol

I did it with out pulling anything off. You just gotta get dirty is all. If you try you'll find that you can reach down in there with you hands.

Theres no coolant in the oil is there?

unless its leaking out off the heater pipe gasket from the back of the timing cover? You should still be able to get in there without removal of anything.

The oil is fine. was a normal brownish color when I changed it, so its nothing HG related. I repulled everything, and about to attempt to pull the alternator to see if its any easier to see in there. I dont know exactly what im looking for, so i'd rather be able to see what the hose looks like.

I'll check both locations. I believe it is definitely hose related though. Prior to me touching the truck, the owner said he had replaced a bunch of hoses to solve a leak, but never could figure it out.

So i pulled the alternator and theres some sort of bracket still blocking my view... im assuming its the power steering or alternator bracket, yeah?

yeah, sounds like it's the 90* elbow hose that's under the alternator/PS pump area that comes off the water pump. when i did my stuff on my 22re I went to 3-4 auto parts stores trying to find the stupid hose so i could replace it because i couldn't get the original off my water pump for the life of me...nobody had it and they all looked at me like i was crazy and claimed there is no 90* hose on the 22re coolant system - idiots. you might have to go to dealer if this is the hose and it's no good. i was finally able to work mine off and it turned out to look ok, so i just reused it for the time being, but it's on my list of things to do try putting a worm-drive hose clamp in there instead of the spring clamps that are on there from factory and see if that stops the leak. if that's not it, check the heater hose and see if that's where the leak comes from - it might just be running down the back side and looks like it's coming from where you think it is.

Yeah it cant be the water pump. I literally just pulled it off again for the 4th time and it was holding water. Maybe i can get to it now once the water pump is off. but I just broke a stud, so now i need to deal with that... luckily i already went and bought 2-3 of them from ACE. lol is the hose visable when the water pump is off?

>_<.... That water is coming from one of 2 places. That elbow hose coming out the timing cover pipe going under the powersteering pump to the steel pipe that goes to the radiator OR the heater pipe behind the timing cover on that same side... Unless the timing cover its cracked in that area....

The "water pump to pipe hose" which is what most parts stores have it listed as is visable without removal of anything.... big hose under power steering pump.

The heater pipe might not be as easily noticed for the novice mechanic but its the pipe running right under the head along the block that "seems" to go into the back of water pump but in reality goes into the back of the timing cover.

Problem solved. I actually managed to check that hose, and nothing was wrong with it. No leaks from anywhere in the coolant system... so therefore, I went back to the water pump and pulled it off... scraped everything off again. put it all back together and didn't leak... go figure, right? there must've been left over paper gasket that i had missed... anyways, thanks guys! 22re is ticking like a champ now. just gonna adjust the idle a little bit and call it good

Okay - I have a leak in the same place but I can't feel the 90-degree hose you're talking about. Can anyone tell me what page of the factory manual illustrates this? Or at least give me some advice on how to get to it.

Do I get to it from the top or bottom? Is there anything I have to remove?

P.S. - just to be sure - we're not talking about the huge hose that is right under the power steering bracket, are we?

FSM PG. 70 #4 remove heater hose 90 degree elbow.

His issue actually ended up being the HG. we replaced the water pump, fixed the leak but the damage was done.

22re Water Pump VERY small leak...I hope?

I removed the plastic panel (3- 12mm and 1- 13 mm) I was looking up from underneath my truck and took a look at the underside of my water pump. I'm looking at a few spots of dried red coolant/antifreeze.
I haven't been having any real noticeable coolant level decrease. It was hot a couple weeks ago and I was reving the motor to get the A/C to run at idle (a no-no, I know the engine temp went into the mid-range, but didn't really overheat.

Will a bit of bolt tightening do the trick or cause more of a problem? It's probably the original pump (190k), but I've always used Toyota OEM Red Coolant and flushed 1x year.
